Windsurfing in Cornwall, Devon and on Exmoor

Whether you want to brush up on your skills or if you’re totally new to windsurfing – there’s no better time to get out on the water and take a lesson. Being able to stand up and get going may feel a little daunting, especially if you have never tried windsurfing before,  but don’t worry, learning to windsurf is not that difficult, we promise!

Windsurfing is a great sport to pick up and it’s relatively easy to learn how to master the basics in a ‘have a go’ session. It’s great fun and suitable for all ages and abilities. Lots of people think windsurfing is hard to learn but it’s a great time for beginners to join the sport – advances in the equipment mean stability on the board is easier, the sails, masts and booms are a lot lighter so you don’t have to worry about trying to pick up a heavy sail which is outdated or too big for your use.

Here are 8 tips to help to learn how to windsurf:

1. Find a recognised RYA centre – we recommend that anyone wishing to learn how to windsurf contact a reputable and certified activity centre. Licensed centres provide professional tuition from a qualified instructors.
2. Have a go session – not sure windsurfing is for you? No problem, a 2 hour ‘have a go’ session offers a great introduction into the sport.
3. Use the correct kit – hire is a cheap way for you to gain access to the latest kit. Recognised training centres will provide the correct kit suited to your needs.
4. Learn about the rig – the kit is divided into two parts, the rig and the board. The rig comprises of the uphaul, mast, boom and sail. Once you learn about the kit, it’s easier to follow instructions clearly and progress with learning how to windsurf.
5. Look were you are going – make sure your centreboard is down, this will prevent you from tracking downwind.
6. Getting on your board – place your sail on the downwind side of the board and jump on from the upwind side.
7. Learn the secure position – whilst in the crouching position, use both hands to pull up the haul and hold onto the mast. Keep your arms extended and knees bent. The secure position is the base for successfully learning the sail position and static turn.
8. How to turn – move the sail around the back of the board keeping the sail low to the water. Your feet should move around the front of the mast mimicking the movement of your sail.
