Have you ever asked your children what is important in their lives?

Research by Play England has found that when children are asked this question, playing and friends are usually at the top of the list and we can understand why – it’s fun and is a fantastic pastime. However there’s so much more to it.

Play England, who provide support and resources to ensure that children’s freedom and space to play throughout childhood is protected and enhanced, say that ‘play is an essential part of every child’s life. It is vital for the enjoyment of childhood as well as for social, emotional, intellectual and physical development.’

Did you know that there is a National Playday?

Usually held on the first Wednesday of August, this year’s Playday falls on the 7^th August. Grown by a group of determined playworkers, Playday started as a few events in 1987 in London. The initiative went national in 1991 and is now the biggest celebration of children’s play in the UK.

So what happens on Playday?

In essence, it is an amazing number of events across the UK which enable children, young people, their families and communities to get out and play, celebrate play, and campaign for play.

At South West Lakes Trust, we really believe that engaging with the natural environment enables people to grow and we are passionate about enabling children and their families to play and explore at our lakes.

This year, Roadford Lake would like to invite children and their families to celebrate this day with them. Our countryside warden, Holly Collingham, will be running exploration walks at 10.30am and 2.00pm, starting from the café and heading out towards the sundial. En route, we will be looking at all our lovely bugs, butterflies and other wildlife. Each session will last for about an hour. We’d also love for everyone to come along with a picnic and a teddy bear to enjoy refreshments overlooking the lake. The cafe will also be open, where you will find ice cream, drinks and other lovely treats. 

Children will also be able to enjoy our small existing play area and you’ll be able to find out about our exciting plans to develop our play area in the near future. Click here to book onto a walk.
