Trout FishingWe extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres! Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters. Young People and Newcomers We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all. Boat Fishing Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page. You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here. Access for All Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance. Clubs A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page. Environment Agency Rod Licence Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand. South West Lakes Trust South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver. Reporting an Incident: South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging. Please use this form to report any incidents of poaching, illegal fishing or any other form of antisocial behaviour to the management team so that we are able to take appropriate action. Any Roadford Brown Trout with adipose removed as part of the project study please record and send any photo/details of these Brown Trout caught. Bag, Catch & Release limits: Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all angler purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing. Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!) Highlights from the week: Some great angling across the venues this week, despite changeable weather conditions ending with the Kennick Pairs on Sunday 2 May. Kennick Pairs Competitions & Results Summary It was a lovely bright sunny day for the start of 2021 Kennick Bank Pairs on Sunday, fairly calm throughout the session with the wind picking up late afternoon. Four teams competed with three teams managing full bags with a total of 32 rainbows caught. Read the full report here. Kennick Thanks to Mike Herring for the following report and photos: The fields near Kennick were still white with frost when I arrived at 8.30, but in the sun and cloudless skies, the temperature had lifted to 6C. All the boats were out and, by the time I packed up at 11.50, there were also four bank anglers.Malcolm U was doing well in Kennick Bay on a floating line with buzzers, fished almost static. He had his first seven in no time at all!Heavy showers were forecast, During the morning clouds were bubbling up and just as I was leaving at 1240 it started to rain, or sleet, or hail, so I got away dry.I caught six, returning two of them. All hard fighting rainbows. One under 2lbs, the other five 2lb or over. The fly was a small orange shrimp, fished slowly on the bottom. Boat Bay and out to the middle was good. Apart from one excursion down to Outer Clampitts, I hung around there, ready to make a dash for shelter, should there be one of the forecast cloudbursts.A stocking took place at approx 11am. Over 300.Some photos below. Tom, Malcolm (playing a rainbow), the other boat with two aboard, and the last one of Mark seeming to be about to test chest waders off the dam!! Later he filled the water tanks by the lodge, using the brand new Honda pump! I hope he didn't suck up any of the mass of tadpoles near the shore!Sunday looks to be about the best day for a bit, so Hil is venturing out with me at long last! A boat is booked. Kennick Weekly Overview: Stocking of 300 rainbow up to 3.5lb Rod Average: 3.7 Fish have been reported as being found at depth this week, with very little surface action. There have been some great days fishing with techniques being varied according to conditions. Andrew G had 10 rainbows, David B had multiple rainbows to 4lbs on more than one occasion, Mike and Hilary Herring enjoyed their day boat fishing, getting 5 rainbows. Mike has kindly written accounts of both that day and another great day spent on the water which is above. Malcolm U had 9 rainbows and 2 browns, Simon F had 6 rainbows with a bag weight of 13lbs 8oz. In addition Siblyback held the Snowbee 4 Team Competition on Sunday Siblyback Weekly Overview: Rod Average: 3.4 Some absolutely cracking sessions this week, despite cold and blustery conditions. Tim S found a sheltered spot and landed 7 fish with the largest at over 4lbs, Phil M-R got 6 fish to 2lbs 9oz and said “what an excellent day. I have never been standing in amongst so many fish”. Mark G got 8 rainbow despite it being a very windy day and had a “cracking afternoon”. John H had 5 rainbow to 2.25lbs. Andy D had 6 fish to 2lbs and included a nice blue at 1.5lbs. Stuart R made his first visit to Burrator and said he will be back again soon after managing 11 rainbow to 3lbs. Gary S had 6 rainbows and 1 brownie. A nice report from Allan L who said he had “a great days sport, saw a lot of fish rising to the buzzer hatch during warm spells” and got 7 rainbows to 2lbs. Great to see and look forward seeing more throughout the season! Generally not a busy week on the water, however some of the Anglers who fished were rewarded with great totals.
