Trout FishingWe extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres! Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters. Young People and Newcomers We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all. Boat Fishing Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page. You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here. Access for All Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance. Clubs A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page. Environment Agency Rod Licence Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand. South West Lakes Trust South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver. Reporting an Incident: South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging. Kennick Rod Average: 3.00 Anglers continuing to produce results using a wide range of tactics at Kennick, with plenty of catches despite a lack of surface activity. Highlights include a new Personal Best for Steve Hadley from Paignton with a 4lb 6oz rainbow, one of a bag of 10 caught on Fab, buzzer and cruncher patterns: 'A fantastic afternoon and evening spent on a boat at Kennick. Constant bites through the session kept me consistently busy. The 2 highlights were my new PB rainbow 4-6-0, which was my first fish over 4lb, and a close encounter with a young deer swimming across the lake!' Wildlife: Kingfisher, chiffchaff, blackcap, swallow, ducks, gulls, cormorants, geese, deer. Paul Huppler from Exeter caught 4 to 2lb on a black buzzer: 'Slow movement of buzzer which was on the dropper, black and peacock spider on blob was untouched, as was the point fly which was a nymph on floating line. Caught fish though there was a large midge hatch at the time, on the land anyway .Sunny but sufficient breeze to ripple the surface. Fish catches and rising fish in the afternoon.' Mike Lunney from Dousland caught 10 rainbows to 2lb 8oz from a boat: 'Just fished in the morning. Very nice day, sunny with gusting wind which lessened at noon. 8 of fish caught on Booby Intermediate line, 2 when it just cast and it was floating, others about 2 feet down on retrieve, short pulls, same depth as buzzer, few fish seen at the surface. Perfect day, great fishing, can’t believe I was the only one at this lovely water. Two Canada geese and two goslings with white goose in the group. 8 other Canadas at far end of reservoir, surprised no goslings . Cuckoo and of course lots Cormorants, saw five.' Brian Sedgebeer from Islington caught 14, 10 for Matt Baines, and 6 for Adrian lesiter, all on floating or hover lines fished subsurface with slow/twitched retrieves. Photos: Brian Sedgebeer: ‘A few of us had a great day on float tubes at Fernworthy on the 26/05. Quite a windy day, took us quite a while to get down to the far side towards the nature reserve area. Steady start at 8.30, I was rigged up with a hover line on my 6wt with various nymphs with the odd Fish now & then, changed to a small blue flash damsel & ripped it in just under the surface, the fish were hammering it. So later on I swapped to a floater with I black muddler with an orange sedgehog 2ft behind it, twitched Back, explosive takes & loads of misses, but was a great afternoon for all of us.’ Photos: Adrian Lessiter: ‘Quite a strong Westerly breeze. A few stockies moving on the surface, but all caught on a hover/subsurface line, with very slow retrieve. Although a fairly strong Westerly, there were no fish moving or caught toward the dam end. Dean Boucher from Gunnislake caught 14 browns to 1lb 2oz: 'Wild wet and windy at Colliford this morning. Nice weather for pulling wets on a floating line. All the usual patterns working well catching and moving fish throughout the morning. Another nice session on Colliford.'
