Trout Fishing

We extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres!

Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters.

Young People and Newcomers

We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all.

Boat Fishing

Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page.

You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here

Access for All

Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Clubs

A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page.

Environment Agency Rod Licence

Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand.

South West Lakes Trust

South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver.

Reporting an Incident:

South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging.

Please use this form to report any incidents of poaching, illegal fishing or any other form of antisocial behaviour to the management team so that we are able to take appropriate action.

A windy and rainy week across our Devon and Cornwall fisheries last week, but still some good fishing to be had for those who ventured out for a session. Kennick was once again the star of the show, with 137 fish between 30 anglers for a rod average of 4.57, and most of the other fisheries not far behind with averages of 3 per angler.

Kennick

Rod Average: 4.57

Kennick benefitted from another stocking on Friday of 315 Rainbow Trout at 2lbs and over, plus 15+ larger surprises! Kennick continued to cement its place as the jewel in the SWLT crown this week with 137 trout caught, with a wide range of flies and lines all producing results. Darren penfold from Newton Abbot caught 6 rainbows to 2lb on an intermediate line, while Ian Page from Yelverton caught 5 to 2lb on a floating line with 5 foot sink tip, retrieved slowly. Simon Vowles and Andy Sterrick from Exeter caught a whopping 40+ between them including one blue trout from their boat (please remember there is a limit of 10 fish per permit and anglers wishing to continue fishing are required to purchase an additional permit): 'Team of flies - 2 Diawl Bachs on droppers and booby on point, all barbless size 12’s, 10 foot leaders fished on fast sinkers, the fish were found mid and deep depths in the water. Fishing with a drogue, slow figure of eight with long pauses and a long 20 second hand at the end of the retrieve (most fish hooked then). Fish caught opposite East Wall, Hawthorn Point, Oaktree point and Popular Bay. 150 metres from shore to right on the edge of the bank.'

BarryWare had a fruitful morning session on Monday, catching his limit before midday: ‘5 fish to the net on my visit to Kennick, I had a short morning session on the lake, the weather was not the best conditions with quite heavy rain for a while, light winds and there were no fish moving. I decided to fish just around the corner from the boat bay. I tackled up with my usual long leader on floating line with damsel on the point and buzzer various nymphs on the droppers, I was soon into my first fish and by midday had caught my limit. Lovely hard fighting and full tails very enjoyable morning.’

Steve Wassell had a great day teaching his friend to fish, who managed to catch 4 of the 11 fish caught between them! It’s always good to hear about new anglers being introduced to the sport and Kennick is a great place to start.

Siblyback

Rod Average: 3.63

John Henderson from Falmouth found the rainbows to be very fit and hard fighting and in excellent condition, catching 18 to 2lb on a floating line with sinking poly leader. Andy Dexter from Pensilva caught 3 on a Sink tip line with medium retrieve.

Photos: Andy Lawson – ‘A tough session after a lot of unsettled weather.

Couldn’t find any rainbows despite trecking around the perimeter of the reservoir. I managed three browns. Stoked that two of them were over a pound.

Truly stunning fish!  All taken on a di5 sinking line on three different flies in three different spots on the reservoir: 1. fulling mill stalking bug, red and black 2. leadhead mini black Fritz and 3. blue flash damsel. Caught at West Bank, North Bank and Cryla Bay.’

Burrator

Rod Average: 3.22

Predominantly wet and windy conditions at Burrator this week with many anglers favouring an intermediate line fished at depth, and Longstone Point seemingly producing the most catches in terms of location. The wild brownies seemed to be particularly active this week with a few being caught from the bank and even a couple of blues wanted in on the action. Rob Slaney from Yelverton caught 13 trout altogether with some browns and a blue amongst the rainbows on a black damsel, while Alan Clements from Plymouth caught 1 rainbow and 1 brown. Patrick Murphy from Plymouth filled his bag with 5 rainbows which were a mixture of overwintered and recently stocked fish, after switching his long leader and floating line for a fast sinking line with boobies which produced steady catches. Alan Clements was lucky enough to spot our pair of resident otters, one of which had a crayfish in its mouth!

Stithians

Rod Average: 3.77

Photo: Simon Peters

Stithians was stocked with 750 rainbows on Thursday, plus 10 larger surprises!

Photos: Andy Lawson – ‘Tough couple of hour’s session. Blowing a hooley; fished down by the sailing club with the wind at my back. Lost one, then nabbed a little brownie to save me from a blank.’

Despite high winds making casting difficult, nearly 50 fish were caught between 13 anglers. John Henderson from Falmouth managed 3 rainbows and 3 browns on a small black spider and orange glister type blob, while Simon Peters from Cusgarne caught 20, including a double hook-up, on a floating line with fast figure of 8 retrieve.

This week also saw the Hollis Trophy Competition at Stithians on Sunday 26th, for which catch returns are yet to be submitted so the figures below will be included in next week’s catch reports:

Our Hollis competition was a tale of two sides. Those that fished around Goonlase point bagged up and had good fishing while those of us that stayed on the water sports bank and Yellowort bank struggled, especially when the wind turned, and blew a gale from the North. I wrongly choose to stick it out with waves crashing on the shore and lashing with rain, in the hope that the fish would come in on that bank were a few had been caught very early morning.  Luckily for me I didn't blank and ended up with a Rainbow and a brown for my first visit since my surgery last June.

10 anglers landed 21 fish with Rich Buckingham winning with a bag of 6,10oz   and John Henderson having the only other full bag 6,6oz

It’s amazing that just a few months back, when we met at the lake, the lake was only 18% full and now has got to be 85%?

It's good to be back on the water fishing.’

Fernworthy

Rod Average: 3.13

Rain and wind seemed to be encouraging fish to the surface for short bursts of activity this week, with a slow retrieve on a floating line appearing to work well during those spells. Nicholas Freeman from Andover caught 6 browns to 2lb 6oz (thus setting the record for this season's largest fish), fishing near the old permit hut where fish were surface feeding throughout the day, remarking that the wild brownies were 'fighting like tigers!' Mick Dodkins from St Germans caught 8 browns to 1lb 15oz: 'Tactics were pulled wet flies on both floating and slow intermediate line. The most productive area being Thornworthy Bay and Thornworthy bank. The wind was funnelled into Thornworthy bank and here the wind speed was nearer 25mph. Fish were mostly caught a few yards from the bank in this area.'

Photo: Rodney Wevill – ‘Slow morning with bright sun, afternoon turned wet and very windy and fish started to move. Floating line, varied retrieve.’

Wildlife Round-up: Spring is in full swing (despite what the weather suggests) with the first House martins starting to appear. Alan Clements was lucky enough to spot Burrator’s resident otters, and frogs and toads are starting to appear in the margins of the lakes. Woodpeckers have been heard drumming away at Kennick, and a Hen Harrier was spotted at Fernworthy.

Without your catch returns these reports wouldn’t be possible, and they also enable us to gain a clearer picture of our lakes and stock levels which in turn will help us to continue to improve our Anglers experience, so do please keep sending them, even if they’re nil returns! Don’t forget to include any wildlife and nature sightings – we love to hear about them and they are a great help to our Environment Team!

Please continue to send us any photos of your catches, the lakes or any wildlife/nature that we could utilise for press articles and social media. We are also keen to see any clear, close-up photos of any flies used, particularly home-tied ones. Please send any photos to [email protected].
