Reminders & Requests

• Please send me any photos of your catches, lakes or any nature or wildlife pictures that we could utilise for press articles or social media posting. It would also be great to have some clear and close up photos of some of the flies used, and would be very keen to see flies tied at home as well, so if you have any photos to hand please send them to - [email protected]
• Please complete Catch Returns online, this will enable us to gain a clearer picture of our lakes and stock levels which of course in turn will help us to continue to improve our Anglers experience.
• Any Roadford Brown Trout with adipose removed as part of the project study please record and send any photo/details of these Brown Trout caught.

 

Bag, Catch & Release limits:

• Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all angler purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing.
• Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited ( if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!)

We currently have four boats available at Kennick, three at Roadford and one at Stithians. The two boats for Siblyback will be available soon.

News and Highlights from the week:

A quieter week, not surprising given the changeable weather which unfortunately led to the rescheduling of the Best of the Best at Burrator until 18 September. The high winds forecast for the Saturday made this the most sensible decision and we do appreciate your understanding. There are still plenty of spaces left for qualifying.

The qualifiers have a maximum of 12 people per heat with the top 6 qualifying for the £2000 final at Kennick on 17 October.

Rod Average: 3.83

Great to see some busy sessions, with fantastic fish yielded. Dave H had 10 fish from his day on the boat, James H with 8 rainbows to 3lbs as well as a brownie, Michael B landed 5 rainbows to 3lbs and Matt B landed 9 rainbows to 2.5lbs. Dave H and Peter G had a cracking day with 8 and 5 fish respectively. Malcolm U had 10 rainbows to 2lbs 8.

Siblyback

Thanks to Phil M-R for this report of his angling:

“Very difficult fishing, the wind was variable and strong, at times gusting and holding at around 20mph. The day started off at less than 4 deg and didn’t rise much above 10 making the wind chill factor very low. In fact I went early as I couldn’t figure of 8 any longer as my fingers were so cold, you wouldn’t believe it was May! The blues gave a great account of themselves, as usual, and I managed to return all fish without touching them which I much prefer. The fish (with the exception of one) took very high in the water, when I first got there - at about 10:15 in the morning, the wind was low and there was a nice ripple on the surface. Fish were moving and bulging on the surface and the was a lot of fly activity, within half an hour the wind got up and that stopped. Still, a good day’s fishing given the conditions - but it would be nice to have a bit of warmth on our backs so we could enjoy them”

Amid changeable and chilly weather, we had reports of very enjoyable fishing with Alan B writing that he “only fished for a few hours, great sport, wish I’d had more time”.

Leighton C had 2 lovely rainbows, Robert W 3 rainbows to 2lbs, Andrew M had 4 rainbows to 2lbs 4, Phil M-R had 4 great fish (see his report above), Al L. had 8 rainbows and Andy C had 1 brown and 5 rainbows.

Burrator

Thanks to Alan Judd for this report of his days fishing, and the great photo:

“A great day at Burrator with more cloud cover than forecast. This seemed to improve the fishing with fish taking higher in the water when the clouds came across. I fished on Pig Trough Bank with a 5 ft midge tip line with best results coming counting down to 30 (although takes would often come on the drop) then a slowish FTA retrieve. The fish came initially to a black taddy then a damsel. In the afternoon I moved to the calmer waters of Back Bay where fish were rising steadily. Here I used a floating line and caught much higher in the water with my black skinny damsel pattern and a diawl bach. What the fish lacked in size was certainly made up for by their fighting ability - great sport!...

“It certainly is fishing well at the moment with other anglers doing equally well or better…”

 

Rod Average: 4.65

Particularly tricky weather conditions, but for those who did manage to venture out there was some rewarding fishing. Jonny M reported that there are “better sized fish and with the water warming up they really are bending the rod”. Alan J had a brilliant session with 9 fish (see his report above- thanks Alan). Stephen Carpenter had 4 rainbow to 2lbs, one angler had 6 rainbows and 1 brown to 4lbs, Simon J had 5 rainbow, 3 browns and 1 blue.

Stithians

Rod Average: 1.55

Lots of insect life observed this week, with fish coming in close to the banks. Well done to Nigel B with 4 rainbows to 2.25lbs, Graeme C with two visits, both resulting in a rainbow, Jonathan P- also 2 fish, Warren C with 6 fish and Adam P with 2 rainbow.

Fernworthy

Rod Average: 2.57

A quiet week, cold but with some lovely nature reports of swallows observed. It was nice to hear of Andrew F catching 3 brownies on his own green damsels tied at home, Nick H  had 6 fish and R.A Swinhoe had 3.

Colliford

Rod Average: 1.44

Some great days, and particularly for Richard T who had an enjoyable session, getting 3 browns and 1 rainbow with cloudy conditions helping overall.

Roadford

Thanks to Richard T for this great account, and photo, of his sessions this week:

“Took advantage of my new Castabout season ticket and had a couple of trips to Roadford on Monday and Tuesday.

Monday was a SW gale and torrential rain but tucked myself away by the bird hide on Gaddacombe inlet and had 6 on a Shrive Missionary fished fast on an intermediate line. No biggies but all fish in great condition.

Yesterday the wind was from the NW so fished the other side with the same method and had 6 again, up to 14.

Although there were plenty of Hawthorns and midges about there was no surface activity from the fish which I am sure were targeting fry over submerged vegetation. The Missionary is a classic perch fry imitator.”

A fantastic week for Richard T -thanks for the report (above)- with 6 browns on one visit and another 6 fish on a subsequent visit. Wayne M had 3 brownies 1 of which was part of the Adipose project.
