Wistlandpound

Kennick  

Rod Average: 3.37

Peter Gilpin from Newton Abbot caught a total of 10 trout from his boat on Friday, landing 4 rainbows to 3.25lb as well as 6 blues to 3lb 12oz on an orange and black booby with slow retrieve. Kennick continues to fish well, producing catches on various flies, lines and retrieval methods.

    

Photos: Mike Herring. ‘I had an hour of magic to-day when Coch Y Bondus appeared and a few rainbows discovered them! I had the dries ready and caught three cracking rainbows, each one taking like a train! Oddly enough, they ignored the beetle fly and instead took an elk hair sedge(1) and a claret snaffler(2), but they did 'make my day'!

Sadly where I was trying, the beetles lasted for only about an hour and everyone else appeared to be fishing sub surface.

It took me until 2 0'clock to 'bag up' with two more, whereas in Smithacott 'ace' Darren Penfold seemed to take less than an hour to do the same! 'Buzzer' John was out, as was Barry Ware, both having a good day with lots of 'takes'.

Dill and Mark were there at the start, telling us that stocking had taken place, which accounted for the presence of at least bank sixteen anglers, three boats and three float tubers. It was also a lovely day to be out, particularly with the rhododendrons in flower.

I heard the cuckoo again and there were a few more swallows about and some house martins. The pair of Great Crested Grebes are still there along with the all-male tufted ducks plus several cormorants.

Photo: Nick Odle. ‘Here's my bag from my first day at Kennick. All taken on the same home tied Montana type, black with sparkely green and a little black maribou tail. All caught between the trees just up from Clampets. Lots of fish moving about. Had a couple more come off. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. I had a really good day.’

Wildlife: Cuckoo heard, pair of grebes, male tufted ducks, swallows, house martins, heron, buzzards.

Siblyback

Rod Average: 4.10

Ron Wilday from Liskeard had a great days fishing, catching 8 rainbows to 3lb: 'Walked all the way around siblyback. Plenty of fish moving but difficult to catch - landed just two Rainbows along west bank, one of them about 3lb.  Wednesday afternoon, AWESOME FISHING - and its about to get better... we fished just along two meadows, I set up with a damsel, cormorant and bibio on the top dropper. Noticed one or two beetles on the water, so changed the point fly to a foam beetle. Surprised it was the Bibio and the cormorant that did the damage. Floating line, just letting it drift in the wind with slow figure of eight retrieve. Fantastic afternoon taking 8 hard fighting rainbows. Lost another five or six, Paul landed another 4 also lost a few, plenty of takes to keep the attention.'

Burrator

Rod Average: 3.35

Mike Lunney from Dousland caught 10 rainbows to 1lb 7oz from a boat: 'Nice sunny day with very light wind to start, picking up a bit by noon when the clouds came. Two anglers fishing the banks. Int. line, slow retrieve with very soft takes. Fish could be seen at surface, so cast to these when possible. Only one fish to the buzzer, two taken with Booby as a dry and 2 on the hang. Slow drift from discovery Bank to the Lawn. Could only fish the morning and gone by 1.30. Canada geese all together sat on Narrator Bank before taking to the water. 40 or so gulls sat on the barrier with 3 Cormorants. Another wonderful days fishing.'

Stithians

Rod Average: 1.69

A large beetle hatch created some good surface sport at Stithians last week. John Henderson from Falmouth caught 5 rainbows to 1lb 12oz on damsel and black beetle patterns, among other anglers also finding success with beetle and hopper patterns.

Fernworthy

Rod Average: 2.33

Steve Holmes fishing Fernworthy on Tuesday for his 57^th year, following the patterns of the hawthorn fly.

A quiet and cloudy week at Fernworthy last week with lots of insect activity but few takes. Despite this, anglers still managed a respectable rod average of over 2 fish each with 5 full bags between them. David Redding from Ropley caught 5 on black nymph patterns, while Nick Evens from Exetr and his fishing partner caught 6 each to 2lb.

Photo: Dave Redding. ‘This was the smallest of my 5. Beautiful colours. Then the next one was almost pure silver! Need to get a smaller net to make them look bigger. A most enjoyable day. Had the whole of Fernworthy to myself!’

Colliford

Rod Average: 5.55

Lots of catches this weekend with the majority of anglers managing to fill their bags and then some. Paul Mockford from St Wenn caught 23 brownies to 30cm on a foam beetle, while Alex Johnstone from St Austell caught 8 and Keith Burnett from Newquay caught 9 on a floating line with fast retrieve.

Wildlife: 3 cuckoos.

 Bag, Catch & Release limits:

• Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all anglers purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing.
• Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!)
