Trout Fishing

We extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres!

Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters.

Young People and Newcomers

We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all.

Boat Fishing

Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page.

You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here

Access for All

Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Clubs

A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page.

Environment Agency Rod Licence

Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand.

South West Lakes Trust

South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver.

Reporting an Incident:

South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging.

Please use this form to report any incidents of poaching, illegal fishing or any other form of antisocial behaviour to the management team so that we are able to take appropriate action.

Reminders & Requests

  • Please send me any photos of your catches, lakes or any nature or wildlife pictures that we could utilise for press articles or social media posting. It would also be great to have some clear and close up photos of some of the flies used, and would be very keen to see flies tied at home as well, so if you have any photos to hand please send them to- [email protected]

  • Please complete Catch Returns online, this will enable us to gain a clearer picture of our lakes and stock levels which of course in turn will help us to continue to improve our Anglers experience.

  • Any Roadford Brown Trout with adipose removed as part of the project study please record and send any photo/details of these Brown Trout caught.

Bag, Catch & Release limits:

  • Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all anglers purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing.
  • Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!)

Wistlandpound

Many thanks to David T for this photo of one his 2 brownies caught at Wistlandpound last Saturday: ‘warm and sunny, fresh wind from the North. Fished 1100 -1430. No insects hatching. Floating line, flies fished dry. No response to submerged flies except Roach.

Kennick

Rod Average: 2.67

Another bumper week for catch returns for Kennick, with 22 day permits purchased and 30 brilliantly detailed catch returns received, which is much appreciated.

Anglers reporting most successes from the boats this week, particularly from the narrows, with trout favouring the deeper waters. A sinking line fished deep with a slow figure of 8 retrieve has proved a popular method with 9 full bags achieved throughout the week. Mike H got the most catches with 6 rainbows, followed by David M with 5 and Mark S with 4 around the 2lb mark. Also some success from the bank anglers with Jeff F's 2 brownies who were in 'very good condition' and Geoff V with his 4 rainbows at 2-2.5lbs.

There was a large hatch of mayfly during the week and some anglers reported that they struggled to catch the interest of the trout whilst they were feasting on the mayflies!

On Friday Kennick was stocked with 300 rainbows up to 4lb.

Thank you to Matt Cox and Graeme Webster for these photos with their catches!

Siblyback

Rod Average: 2.13

Lots of insect and fish activity reported this week, as summarised by Phil M-R: 'Hot and sultry at times, with wind speeds between 5 and 10mph and from the North to NW. Loads of cormorants and geese again. Quite a varied fly life, lots of sedge first thing along with buzzers and damsels (loads of damsels) and the beetles came out early in the day which surprised me. Hectic day stacks of fish moving I landed 7 - but missed well over a dozen takes and lost a large number (8 plus - I lost count) off the hook, a number of them right at the net which was frustrating. Another good day.'

Chris H caught a literal mixed bag with 4 rainbows at 14-18", 1 12" brown and a blue at 18".’

Tony Hern held his ‘Learn to Fly Fish’ tuition session with Shawn Hale on Saturday 26th: ‘First ideal fishing day I’ve had for ages, usually plagued with wind or rain or bright sun! Amazed that nobody else was fishing at Siblyback yesterday, but there about 200 people there enjoying the facilities. Fish were rising most of the day in spite of water being warm to the touch, 16c perhaps.’

Thank you to Phil M-R for these pictures of his home-tied beetle flies:

On the left is the version he ties with no legs, relying on the hackle for representation. On the right is his varnished version with rubber legs.

Burrator

Very changeable weather this week, from bright sunshine to torrential rain and everything in between, presenting tricky fishing conditions: Pete L 'Fished from 10.30 am till 1700 hrs stiff breeze from the west until about 1600 hrs then it dropped away to almost nothing, experienced two heavy downpours in between, fished all depths, multiple changes of flies only managed two half-hearted tugs all day, no other anglers seen. The surface water temp was quite warm, maybe this was the cause of fish inactivity.' Despite this we still got a fair few good bags with Mike E catching 9 1lb rainbows from his boat, and Robert S and Glyn managing 4 each, from boat and bank respectively.

Thank you to Al Lawson for his report and pictures: ‘Tricky day on burry yesterday with rises few and far between. Bright sunshine at times with very little breeze. Managed one within the first hour taken deep on a black Fritz. I could still see beetles on the surface and buzzer shucks as the day went on so switched back to the floating line and fishing the tree lines. With some cloud cover and gentle ripple things looking better. Two short drifts along discovery bank at the end of my session produced four fish best just over pound and a half and fighting well. Great day.’

Stithians

Rod Average: 1.91

A big thank you for all the catch returns received this week; 23 day permits were purchased and the same number of catch returns were received which is a great help to us and fellow anglers. Keep them coming!

Some challenging conditions reported this week, as summarised by Simon P: '1 fish for 6 hours fishing! Wet and windy conditions. Lots of fish on the surface at 5.30am but didn’t seem too interested in feeding. Tried loads of different methods / Flys. Around 7am the fish disappeared totally, no bites no fish evident and looked like a blank was on the cards! Finally managed 1 small rainbow on a tequila blob at 11am. Loads of Rudd caught.'

Barry J, Paul W, Graeme C and Robert L also reported a fair few Rudd with 18 caught between them, but still a respectable number of trout caught totalling 44. Simon P's perseverance paid off with a full bag of 1-1.5lb rainbows caught from Pipe Bay in a float tube.

Fernworthy

Rod Average: 3.86

Lots of activity reported this week, with a large fall of chafer beetles tempting the fish to the surface, as reported by Terry H: 'Large fall of Coch -y- bondhu on the north bank and with a northerly wind many blown onto the water with fish rising everywhere. A fantastic day with 8 fish to hand and as many lost.' Louise didn't have such luck with a nil catch but had a great day nonetheless: 'Overcast and humid. Missed at least a dozen fish. Too busy watching the swallows and baby mallards. Also maybe not concentrating. Coch-y-bondhu fall was epic! Had a fantastic day albeit fishless.'

Other notable catches included Clive G with 5, and Roy G with 7.

Full bags achieved by George W with 6 brownies under 1lb, Andy B with 9 more small ones (and a 4lb carp!) and Nigel B with 5.  Christopher B had less luck with nil catches but reported 'perfect overcast conditions with a nice breeze, alas nothing hatching/ being blown on, I fished for 3 hours and had one tentative take, I think the fish have moved out to cooler deeper water??'

Roadford

Rod Average: 0.50

A low rod average this week due to only 4 day permits being purchased and 2 catch returns received.

Nick F reported one brown trout at a respectable 30cm on a floating line, whilst Nigel H had a good day’s perch fishing with 5 caught from the bank.
