Trout FishingWe extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres! Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters. Young People and Newcomers We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all. Boat Fishing Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page. You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here. Access for All Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance. Clubs A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page. Environment Agency Rod Licence Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand. South West Lakes Trust South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver. Reporting an Incident: South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging. Bag, Catch & Release limits: Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all anglers purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing. Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!) News and Highlights from the week: Anglers have braved the weather this week to produce some nice catches, with plenty of good sized fish. Highlights include 3 full bags between 3 anglers creating a rod average of 6 and a 4lb rainbow caught by Graham Roberts at Kennick. Please keep the catch reports coming in, we really do appreciate the depth of information they offer and it’s a great help to us. Thanks also for the great photos and videos we’ve received so far. Kennick Rod Average: 1.44 Fish still favouring deeper waters currently, with most activity reported in the evening. This week’s largest fish was caught by Graham Roberts from Totnes; a 4lb rainbow found deep down in the middle drifts. Graham also caught another rainbow at 2.5lbs and a brown at 1.5lbs which was feeding on damsel flies in the shallows. Charlie Mason from Cullompton landed a couple of nicely sized rainbows at 2lb and 2.4lb on a green damsel despite reporting little surface activity, while Matt Baines got a full bag with 6 rainbows to 2.5lb from a float tube in central water. View the full Catch Report here Check out the Kennick fishing map here The Kennick fishing guide is here Siblyback Rod Average: 1.50 3 rainbows caught this week by just the one angler who braved the weather; Phil Messenger-Rogers from St Austell caught 2 at 1.25lb and 2lb on Monday: 'Showery, quite warm. No fly life and almost nothing moving on the surface. The fish were not too far down though and the first was caught on a very slow retrieved yellow snake and the second was a fast retrieved black strider about two feet down.' Another session on Wednesday produced a rainbow of 2.56lb, caught about 3ft down with a very slow retrieve. View the full Catch Report here Read our guide to fishing at Siblyback here Check out our Siblyback fishing map here Burrator Rod Average: 0.78 Water temperatures remain high at Burrator which, combined with a lack of insect activity, seems to be keeping the fish in deeper waters. Some nice sized fish were caught by Sam Brown from Plymouth with 2 rainbows at 2lb and 3lb, and Steve Carpenter (also from Plymouth) caught another at 2lb. Chris Haydon achieved the closest to a full bag with 3 fish; 1 brown at 0.5lb and 2 rainbows to 1lb 9oz, fished on an intermediate line with peacock spider dropper. Pete Laidlaw from Plymouth had a nil return but not an entirely blank day: ‘Although it was a nil report it wasn’t a blank day so to speak. Started fishing at about 11.00 am after a heavy downpour, light winds and witnessed a few trout rising, using a dry fly daddy I soon had a decent take but unfortunately lost it after a short fight. Along came another heavy downpour accompanied by a stiff breeze. Changed to blue damsel floating line, still and slow retrieve, two more good pulls but nothing to show for it then all quiet. Changed again to Hares ear, fished deep with slow retrieve. After a while only one more take but lost that one again. John Henderson from Falmouth caught 2 at 1lb 8oz and 1lb 2oz near the surface with a medium speed retrieve, while Richard Buckingham from Helston caught 3 rainbows to 1lb 15oz on a floating line and Graeme Clement from Edgecumbe caught 1 at 1lb 4oz. Nick Hawkins from South Brent caught 4 browns between 0.50-0.75lb: 'Very difficult during the afternoon with heavy squally rain and choppy surface all around the reservoir. No rises. Few insects. Turned calmer after about five and trout were caught on a black and peacock below the surface on a long leader, floating line, close in to the bank. Beautiful evening. It’s all about the weather.' Charles Edward Beney from Wincanton caught 8 browns with a team of wet flies: ‘A great few hours fishing despite perhaps the worst weather I’ve ever fished in - lashing rain and a howling SW gale. Fished Brownhills and found the fish sitting about 20 yds off bank working the foam lanes - all takes in the top 12 inches of water with a steady retrieve. Hooked and lost several others and had numerous bumps but big waves and high wind made contacting fish tricky. Happily caught my best ever Fernworthy brown - am guessing around the 2 1/2 lb mark. Not sure if I’ll have time for one last days fishing this season - if this proves to have been the last day, what a way to end the season.’ View the full Catch Report here Read our guide to fishing at Fernworthy here Check out our Fernworthy fishing map here Colliford Rod Average: 2.64 Photo: Chris Tilyard The weather has created some challenging but enjoyable fishing at Colliford this week, with a total of 37 fish caught and a respectable rod average of 2.64. Dean Boucher from Gunnislake caught a total of 13 browns over the course of 2 days, the largest weighing in at 2lb 4oz: ‘The forecast was for some early cloud soon clearing to leave a bright and breezy day so I decided to make an early start to try and make the most of the best conditions. Fished pulled wets on a floating line. Not for the first time the Soldier Palmer was king catching 5 of the 6 fish I caught this morning. However the best fish of the morning took the Tadpole on the point. A good one too just under 19 inches long, estimated weight 2lb 4ozs. The forecast proved spot on and by late morning the cloud cover was more or less was gone and the fishing really slowed so after a nice little session I headed home happy for lunch.’ Paul Mockford from St Wenn also achieved a full bag with 6 25-30cm browns, while Alex Stewart from Wisbech caught 5 and Chris Tilyard from Fraddon caught 3 to 38cm. Dean Boucher got a full bag with 4 browns to 16", the best weighing in at 1lb 10oz caught on a zulu on floating line. Nick Stacey from reading caught 3, while John Isaac from Newquay got another full bag of 5 brown trout at 1lb to 3lb 4oz.
