Trout Fishing

We extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres!

Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters.

Young People and Newcomers

We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all.

Boat Fishing

Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page.

You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here

Access for All

Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Clubs

A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page.

Environment Agency Rod Licence

Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand.

South West Lakes Trust

South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver.

Reporting an Incident:

South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging.

Please use this form to report any incidents of poaching, illegal fishing or any other form of antisocial behaviour to the management team so that we are able to take appropriate action.

Kennick

Rod Average: 3.78

Fish are still coming to surface to feed on hatches of crane flies and gnats, and being found in the top 10ft of water. Mike Herring from Kingsbridge caught 5 rainbows, two of which were over 3lb, on damsel and montana patterns: 'To start off with I made the mistake of assuming fish were on the bottom in the middle. No, they were closer to the shore and between 6ft and 10ft down. I tried the dries for an hour first, but no success. Very enjoyable day. I lost 2 and had half a dozen solid takes as well.' Graham Roberts from Totnes caught 6 rainbows to 4lbs: 'Cool, breezy, mostly cloudy. Best response, morning, tailing off by afternoon. Found fish in the top 4-5 feet of water, or on the surface, taking one fish at Clampitts on a dry sedge. Rest on lures or nymphs, losing another five or so fish. Apart from the usual wildlife suspects, watched a hind with her fawn on Heather Bank for a while.'

Mike Herring's catch of 5 rainbows to 3lb.

Wildlife sightings: Deer with fawn on Heather bank, pair of Little Grebes, Spotted Flycatchers, House Martins, Swallows, Tufted Ducks.

Burrator

Rod Average: 3.76

Insect hatches are starting to subside now but there has still been some surface activity, with fish appearing to be moving in shoals and found near the top of the water column. Jonny Mac from Plympton caught 7 rainbows to 2lb and 1 brownie: 'A beautiful evening at Burrator. Fish were definitely moving in shoals. Followed them down back bay and then to longstone point. Initially they were in top part of water but then went very deep. Some sedges seen hatching and plenty of fish moving on the surface. ' Micheal Lunney from Dousland caught 6 rainbows: 'Weather good to start, over cast with light wind which increased quite a lot by the afternoon, rain about 11.30. Had to anchor as drift too fast as the wind increased. Drop in level has made my favourite spot too shallow so had to search for fish anchoring 20-30 minutes in various spots. Finally found some fish after 3 hours looking, Discovery Bank. Started with floating line but switched to intermediate as wind increased.' Some good sized fish have been caught, with this week’s largest being a 3lb rainbow caught by Kevin Sellars.

Photos: Allan Lawson ‘Fished burry today between 10.30 and 15.00. Nicely overcast with a steady s/w breeze & the odd shower thrown in.Started on longstone working along the bank towards the back bay. Nothing showing at all, plus not much insect life going on either. About halfway to the bay and hit a couple of lovely rainbows & bigger than the average stamp and superb condition and fight.

One on the 2lb mark the other nearly 3lb I’d guess. The bigger fish refused the photo opportunity and shot off once unhooked. Managed one more here with the fish taking a different fly each time. Soldier Palmer, Bibbio and Damsel all proving successful. Finished the session near sheepstor damn end. 3 smaller rainbows here and a small brownie all to damsel floating line long leader and pulled’.

Stithians

Rod Average: 4.17

Varying levels of surface activity at Stithians this week, with anglers favouring a floating line and a slow retrieve. John henderson from Falmouth caught 6 rainbows and 7 browns: 'Light breeze from NW, fishing a floating line with beetle on droppers and beaded damsel on point. Most fish coming up to surface to beetle. Excellent condition fish.' Simon Peters from Cusgarne caught 14 rainbows to 2.5lb and one small brown: '5am start. Light Westerly wind with heavy showers. Lots of fish on surface so fished Dry Fly to begin with and had 7. When the sun came up the fish went slightly deeper so switched to the Washing Line Method and picked up a further 8. Finished at 7.30am. A Buzzard was trying to take young Gulls from the pontoon.'

Other wildlife sightings include eight herons!
