Trout Fishing

We extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres!

Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters.

Young People and Newcomers

We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all.

Boat Fishing

Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page.

You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here

Access for All

Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Clubs

A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page.

Environment Agency Rod Licence

Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand.

South West Lakes Trust

South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver.

Reporting an Incident:

South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging.

Please use this form to report any incidents of poaching, illegal fishing or any other form of antisocial behaviour to the management team so that we are able to take appropriate action.

Reminders & Requests

  • Please send me any photos of your catches, lakes or any nature or wildlife pictures that we could utilise for press articles or social media posting. • Any Roadford Brown Troutwith adipose removed as part of the project study please record and send any photo/details of these Brown Trout caught.

Kennick

Rod Average: 3.03

The majority of anglers at Kennick favouring a deep sinking line with a slow retireve this week; 'Buzzers successful in 18 Foot depth close to bottom. White or orange tungsten bead head on Dorsey yarn indicator worked well. Small window for booby takes between 10 and 12 - deep buzzers consisted through most of the day.' - Richard B.

Also thank you to Roger P for his report: 'Early morning 5.00am, North west breeze going up along the lake, the water was bubbling with fish top and tailing everywhere, but untouchable. Mid-morning that stopped and the odd fish was showing, they had gone deep. I went through all the lines, sink tip-inter- then the fast sink, natural patterns weren’t working, so the orange blob took 2 and a winter long shank size 8 black & orange frizz put 3 in the net, but lost 2 at the net and miss probably 12. '

Graham R: ‘Most caught in bright sun in the morning on sinking lines. One fish of 2.25lbs had large parallel scratches on each flank.....undoubtedly a failed attempt by a cormorant.....a smaller fish would not have escaped! Large numbers of very small insects widely seen skating and hovering at the surface. Many fish rising on the surface, throughout the day, and good numbers of Coch y Bondhu type beetles in the water and flying past.’

Kevin M: ‘Very hot and bright sunshine. 11:00 to 15:00 Spent some on intermediate line as no fish showing on surface. Switched to booby as controller for washing line with buzzer and cruncher. Both fish went for the booby. One other missed take.’

Siblyback

Rod Average: 3.75

Lots of beetle activity around Siblyback this week, with plenty of fish rising and subsequently many anglers reporting most successes with various beetle flies fished on the surface.

Thank you to Phil M-R for his report: ‘I arrived at the reservoir quite early, at 06:30 with fellow angler Simon. It was a bright day with light winds which varied from NE to NW and was quite light - between 7 and 12miles per hour on the anemometer. It stayed bright all day (contrary to most forecasts) and was very warm right from the start, what cloud we did see was quite high. There were no fish showing on the surface early on and most seemed to be a few feet down. As it warmed further we saw many of the beetles gathering in the willows around the lake, so we walked around to the North Bank where the wind was blowing them off the land as they took to the wing. I had never seen a flock of Cormorants before today - but there were about a dozen of them sat on a small island which has now been exposed in the marsh area all drying their wings in the morning sun, whilst stretched all along the North Bank was a large flock of geese - I love the noise they make... constantly chattering. We used two variations sizes of black beetle one was a black blob with a foam back size 12 which was unfortunately lost - and the other was a foam backed beetle with peacock body and a light olive grizzly cock hackle in sizes #12 and #14. One had rubber legs. Simon had a good solid take on a montana early on - which he unfortunately lost and that was pretty much it with regard sub surface flies. Later we started to see swirls - still quite some way from the bank - but they were getting nearer and we could also see small groups of beetles that had lost their fight with the breeze and plopped into water in front of us. A quick change to the dry beetle brought an immediate response and the game was on... Another excellent days sport - fun, fast and really hard fighting fish - in particular another 20 fish which was lean and in absolutely cracking condition.’

Burrator

Rod Average: 1.31

Quiet week at Burrator this week with one full bag for Stuart M who caught 6 browns and 1 rainbow from his boat on Friday. Richard P found it hard to compete with the beetles that the fish were feeding on: 'Had a great day with my son in law unfortunately blanked. They seemed to be feeding on small black beetles and did not have anything that could tempt them apart from 4 knocks on black and green buzzers. Thank you great day'. Alan C was lucky enought to spot a kingfisher on his session – let’s hope it remembered it's catch return!

Stithians

Rod Average: 1.97

Congratulations to Dr Adam Price who landed this fantastic 7lb brownie this week:

‘Although not season ticket holders we fish Stithians fairly frequently. I was fishing on the North shore at Stithians at about 11.30am on Friday 25th of June. I was using a 9 foot 6 wt rod, with a 15 foot leader of 5lb fluorocarbon with a red holo Diawl Bach on the point and a green holo DB on the dropper, both size 12. Both home tied. The wind was a Force 3-4 North Westerly and there was gentle rain at times. I was very slowly figure of 8 retrieving when all went tight. The fish made two powerful runs, taking me down to my backing, before cruising and boring strongly about three rod lengths out. Eventually I netted it and removed the hook with the fish in the water in the net. I removed it very briefly for the photo before releasing it when it swam away strongly. I have caught several large rainbows, seatrout and salmon in my fishing life, and I would estimate the fish as weighing about 7lbs. It was in immaculate condition, with a beautiful shape, fin perfect with a huge tail. There was no sign of cannibalism, and no kype, so I suspect it was a female. Just for the record, I lost 3 cracking rainbows, all over 2 lbs, in the same four hour session.’

Other notable reports were from Mike F: 'Lots of surface activity from Rainbows around 7.30pm. The 12 oz Brown Trout was in very good condition and great sport on my 3 wt setup, running off against the reel drag. Several fish lost during the session, including 1 smash-take. Barbless hooks and 4lb tippet for dry fly, searching for wild Browns mostly.' and Clive P with 5 rainbows and 1 brown 'All caught on drys in the first ripple 25ft off the shore, 5 on gnat on the point and 1 on the klinkhammer, dropper in 1 hour between 3 and 4pm. Bright sunshine.'

Thanks to Derek Grove for this photo of some of his catch:

Fernworthy

Rod Average: 4.50

A quiet week at Fernworthy, with only 6 catch returns received  and anglers reporting having the lake to themselves. Brian D caught nine 16-24cm brownies on Wednesday with a bibio and sedgehog, both on the surface: 'Weather was bright and sunny, nice ripple on the water. Some beetles noticed in the margins. Arrived 9.15am left 4.30pm. Only one other fisherman there when we arrived and we didn’t see any others all day.'

Steve H managed 6 small trout and Tony P caught one at 28cm.

Colliford

Rod Average: 0.88

Very few insect hatches reported this week resulting in very few rises, until Saturday when Chris T landed 6 browns on a GRHE dry fly and a bobs bits: 'Lots of insects being blown on to the water and fish rising everywhere, some close to the bank. Had a frustrating 1st hour though trying different dry flies and it wasn’t until I changed down to a 6x leader that I finally caught on a GRHE dry. 2 more followed before the wind dropped completely and things got tougher. Moved back to the dam and switched to black bobs bits pulled just below the surface which worked a treat. Caught 3 more better fish up to a pound and lost a couple more.'

The carp seemed to want in on the action this week, with anglers catching 3 of them. Chris B landed 1 brown trout and a 6lb carp: ‘Hard days fishing for Browns, took a small one off the surface and missed a couple of slashes to the dries, switched to wets, again the fish didn`t respond. Had some fun with a carp which took the sedge fairly hooked in the scissors.’
