Trout Fishing

We extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres!

Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters.

Young People and Newcomers

We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all.

Boat Fishing

Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page.

You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here

Access for All

Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Clubs

A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page.

Environment Agency Rod Licence

Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand.

South West Lakes Trust

South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver.

Reporting an Incident:

South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging.

Please use this form to report any incidents of poaching, illegal fishing or any other form of antisocial behaviour to the management team so that we are able to take appropriate action.

Reminders & Requests

  • Please send me any photos of your catches, lakes or any nature or wildlife pictures that we could utilise for press articles or social media posting. It would also be great to have some clear and close up photos of some of the flies used, and would be very keen to see flies tied at home as well, so if you have any photos to hand please send them to- [email protected]

  • Please complete Catch Returns online, this will enable us to gain a clearer picture of our lakes and stock levels which of course in turn will help us to continue to improve our Anglers experience.

  • Any Roadford Brown Trout with adipose removed as part of the project study please record and send any photo/details of these Brown Trout caught.

Bag, Catch & Release limits:

  • Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all anglers purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing.
  • Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!)

News and Highlights from the week:

Catch reports are starting to wind down now as the trout season begins to draw to a close. The brown trout season has now come to an end but anglers are still making the most of what remains of the rainbow season before it finishes at the end of November.

Kennick was stocked with 300 rainbows to 2lb on Thursday 21st, and Siblyback was stocked with 600 to 2.5lb on Friday 22nd.

Kennick

Rod Average: 1.64

Varied levels of surface activity reported at Kennick this week with the majority of fish being caught deep. Steve Hadley from Paignton beat his personal best with his first 3lb rainbow from a boat off Clampitts, Matt Baines caught 5 to 3lb from a float tube in central water, Brian Sedgebeer from Islington caught 2 rainbows to 2lb and 2 browns at 9" and 12" on a floating line with slow retrieve, and Graham Roberts from Totnes caught 3 rainbows at 2lbs, 4lbs and 4.25lbs plus a 1lb brownie.

Thank you to Mark Earll for providing the photo below: ‘I landed one Rainbow Trout of approx. 1 3/4 lb. I had a great days fishing, had loads of bites and lost 2 fish (they don’t stay on the hook very well!). I hope to return, it’s a great fishery and one of my favourite places to fish.’

Burrator

Rod Average: 1.71

The fish seem to be staying deep at Burrator this week so anglers have been favouring intermediate and sink tip lines. Jon Rood from Plymouth caught 2 rainbows of around 1.5lb on a Diawl bach and yellow blob with a long leader on a sink tip line, Malcolm Palmer from Poole caught 4  to 2lb  at varied depths with varied retrieves, and Al Lawson from Plymouth managed 1 rainbow at 1.5lb and 2 browns at 1.75lb and 4lb which is this season's heaviest recorded brown trout at Burrator:

'No fish showing today but still managed a small rainbow on a dry daddy muddler. Switched to an intermediate line and blue flash damsel as the breeze picked up. This got me two browns one of which not weighed but 4lb ish approx and the other 1 1/4lb ish. The bigger brown gave three good runs before coming to the net. Not handled and safely released, left me smiling from ear to ear.’

Stithians

Rod Average: 2.22

Varied levels of surface activity this week with anglers utilising various methods to convert to catches. Simon Peters from Cusgarne caught 4 rainbows including his biggest Stithians fish to date at 3lb 1oz: ‘Really great 2 hour late session. 3 fish in 12 minutes on Blue Flash Damsel, fished intermediate line with a very fast retrieve just as the light was fading. The fish were moving closer in and chasing the fry. Also took a lovely 3lb 1oz Rainbow on a Fab fished as a washing line very close in. Weather was typical Stithians - Fog, Mist and Southerly Wind!!!!’

Graeme Clement from Edgecumbe landed 1 rainbow at 1lb 4oz, dropping another and gaining several follows with fish coming from deep.

John Henderson from Falmouth caught 3 rainbows to 2lb and two browns to 1lb on daddy long-legs and black cormorant patterns, while Clive Pearce caught 5 rainbows to 3lb under John’s mentorship: ‘Very enjoyable day with the great John Henderson as my mentor. Used the infamous orange blob on a washing line for the first catch but noticed several rises. The fish were feeding and John suggested a fry imitation. So I changed to pulling a blue flash damsel and had three rainbows in 30 minutes. I was happy enough with that so tried my favourite but tougher method, the dry dropper. A lovely rainbow rolled over my dry fly right under Mr Henderson’s nose and I struck too late and missed it!! So I cast straight back in the same spot and the fish took it immediately...phew, and that finished off a wonderful day. Thanks again John for your great advice.’
