Trout Fishing

We extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres!

Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters.

Young People and Newcomers

We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all.

Boat Fishing

Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page.

You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here

Access for All

Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Clubs

A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page.

Environment Agency Rod Licence

Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand.

South West Lakes Trust

South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver.

Reporting an Incident:

South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging.

Please use this form to report any incidents of poaching, illegal fishing or any other form of antisocial behaviour to the management team so that we are able to take appropriate action.

Reminders & Requests

  • Please send me any photos of your catches, lakes or any nature or wildlife pictures that we could utilise for press articles or social media posting. It would also be great to have some clear and close up photos of some of the flies used, and would be very keen to see flies tied at home as well, so if you have any photos to hand please send them to- [email protected]

  • Please complete Catch Returns online, this will enable us to gain a clearer picture of our lakes and stock levels which of course in turn will help us to continue to improve our Anglers experience.

  • Any Roadford Brown Trout with adipose removed as part of the project study please record and send any photo/details of these Brown Trout caught.

Bag, Catch & Release limits:

  • Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all anglers purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing.
  • Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!)

Kennick

 Kennick Highlights:

 Rod Average: 2.37

A good week for rainbow fishing at Kennick this week, with Andrew G and John P both catching a full bag, with most successes coming from boats in the centre of the lake. Malcolm U came away with 10 in total as did Peter G and Matt B from his float tube, all ranging from 1.5-2.5lbs.

Thank you Mike H for the following report and photos:

For a change, I decided on an evening's fishing, to witness the famous Kennick evening rise. Arriving at 3pm, Malcolm U had already bagged up and packed up, whilst Tom H and Alan R had accounted for 10 rainbows between them (including Tom's fist ever via a sinking line which Alan immediately made him stop doing and return to a floater!). No other boats were out until 5.45 when a couple of 'very much-younger-than-me anglers' took up the last boat booking. Kennick looked wonderful, with the Rhododendrons full out (at last). There were only a few bank anglers, including Jan (of Jan's Rock). It was difficult. Conditions appeared to be good with a gentle breeze, but the 'rise' simply didn't happen. Just one two pound rainbow made the mistake of surfacing within casting range, and I got him! After a good fight (and return) I wasn't blank, without resorting to the 'artless deep stuff'.

It was quiet. There were no swallows or house martins present, but I photographed some ducklings. The second brood were 'just hatched' and until I got near the mother was carrying a few of them on her back!

It had clouded over and just began to drizzle when I drove out at 9.28pm.

Siblyback

Siblyback Highlights:

 Rod Average: 3.00

Lots of insect life reported this week resulting in a good number of fish rising, which anglers converted to catches. Dave S caught 12 rainbows and 3 browns from the bank, while Roger P caught 5 2lb rainbows from a boat drifting off the West bank, all on viva and buzzers.

Thanks to Phil M-R for his report from Wednesday:

Over cast first thing in the morning with light winds. Early air temp around 20C varied fly life, buzzers and one or two sedges showing. Later at around 10- 10:30 it became quite bright with wind speeds at 7-10mph - it warmed up quite quickly and the wind veered around to the west. As soon as it warmed up and the sun came out the beetles appeared in their droves. I had tied up some beetle patterns but on size #14s, tiny little things. These things were like Russian freight planes and you could hear them plopping into the water - my #14s were not much of an imitation and were largely ignored - save one who was clearly myopic. He was a good fish of around 2lb I had another on a dry fly - after midday. Later I tried a blob as it was a similar size to the beetles and I had a further 2 on that, one of which was an excellent fish which I measured at 22 at my net. A beautiful fish that fought really hard. I dont weigh the fish I catch - and I try my best not to touch or handle them in any way. I spent quite a lot of time resting the fish I had as in this hot weather they dont seem to recover so quickly, we saw a number of fish at the beginning of Stocky Bay who sadly didnt make it. Altogether another brilliant day - I really must tie some larger flies for next week, or maybe a black FAB with some legs?

Wildlife-wise, despite the insect activity Chrsitopher G noted ‘surprisingly few swallows’, but cormorants, ducks and geese have been present.

Burrator

 Burrator Highlights:

 Rod Average: 0.62

A quiet one this week with the majority of anglers reporting nil catches due to the lack of fish activity caused by the warm weather. Paul T had more luck with 2 25cm browns and 1 rainbow caught from the bank, reporting perfect conditions but the wind direction making casting difficult; and A Lawson catching 4x 15" browns from a boat.

Stuart M: '6 Browns & 1 Rainbow 3 browns of about a pound each all off the top on a floating beetle. The rainbow came to a sinking line but was stuffed full of coch y bundhu beetles was well mended and had clearly been in the water since at least the start of the season. There wasn’t an evening rise at all, just the odd fish showing here and there. All three of the bigger browns came by casting toward bushes and trees where there was a fish showing itself regularly. Lots of fish on the finder, but mostly quite tightly shoaled and lying about 8 to 15 ft deep. Saw 7 cormorants toward the top of the reservoir.'

Stithians

Stithians Highlights:

Rod Average: 7.38

A bumper week with some enjoyable fishing to be had this week: Warren C reported the best dry fly sport he's ever had on Thursday: 'fished 930am-2pm. Few fish rising but not loads, but as soon as flies hit water, fish were hitting it.' and returning the next day with junior angler Finley, age 7: 'After yesterday’s amazing day I took Finley up in the afternoon, to try and get a few on dryfly, he landed 2 and lost a couple. We tried north bank for a change, Fish were rising but out at a distance 30yds.' Clive P had a good weekend session with 21 trout in total over the course of the weekend, as well as 2 Rudd: 'Thankyou Stithians for an amazing weekend! Dry fly heaven, especially Saturday afternoon, all in my favourite spot although tough left to right wind being a lefty.'

A total of 33 Rudd caught over the course of the week, and as well as a lot of chafer activity we also had sightings of herons, damselflies, cormorants and a family of ducks.

Colliford

Colliford Highlights:

Rod Average: 3.25

A couple of full bags this week with Chris B catching 10 8-12oz browns over the course of 2 days: 'Arrived 11am left 3.30 Good fall of beetles so I fished the dry fly, great sport missed more than I caught, wind changeable to flat calm, some very large fish taking beetles of the top sadly way out of casting range. Takes and beetles switched off after 2ish so I fished foam beetle retrieved in the ripple for a bonus fish before I went home.’ But a less successful day the following day: ‘After Wednesdays success I ventured out the following day to try and find some bigger fish. I arrived at the Dam @ 10am to be greeted by a horrible leader tangling blustery N/E wind. I fished the bank with the wind coming over my left hand shoulder. Hardly any insects being blown on and no fish rising unlike yesterdays beetle bonanza. All the fish where caught around lunch time and like yesterday they just switched off or moved on. Fish hooked and lost and numerous takes during a hectic 2 hour spell, nothing any size though apart from a brief encounter with a large Carp which slipped the hook.’

Roadford

Roadford Highlights:

Rod Average: 0.38

A couple of new records for the season this week with a personal best from Gary S: 'Only 3 fish caught but the first of the day was a personal best at Roadford. A 2.5lb beauty from the boils. Took a black woolly bugger on a sunk line, third cast of the day!' and Wayne M with 5 browns up to 2.25lbs: 'Early morning, a few fish rising, cloudy, dry line, fish taken just under the surface three to the bibio and two to diawl Bach, also had a double hook up of two trout luckily the two smaller ones of the day one of which had its adipose fin clipped, also lost a few and caught many small perch. The best fish fought really well and was a lovely trout of two and a quarter pound, I thought it was bigger! All around good Father’s Day morning.'
