Reminders & Requests

• Please send me any photos of your catches, lakes or any nature or wildlife pictures that we could utilise for press articles or social media posting. It would also be great to have some clear and close up photos of some of the flies used, and would be very keen to see flies tied at home as well, so if you have any photos to hand please send them to- [email protected]

 

• Please complete Catch Returns online, this will enable us to gain a clearer picture of our lakes and stock levels which of course in turn will help us to continue to improve our Anglers experience.

 

• Any Roadford Brown Trout with adipose removed as part of the project study please record and send any photo/details of these Brown Trout caught.

 

Bag, Catch & Release limits:

• Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all anglers purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing.
• Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!)

News and Highlights from the week:

 

With the brown trout season having drawn to a close on 12^th October, and just over a month before the end of rainbow season on 30^th November, anglers have been busy squeezing in their final sessions of the year. The cooling temperatures and mostly overcast weather have produced an increase in fish activity which anglers have converted to catches, including some nice sized fish at Kennick which was stocked with 300 rainbows to 2lb on Monday 11^th.

Best of the Best Kennick – 17^th October

Sunday 17th October saw the final of the Best of the Best take place at Kennick. It was a really enjoyable day with some superb fishing and very respectable bag weights. Well done to the Winner – Dave Johns- with 12 fish and a total bag weight of 25lbs 2oz. Runner up was Andy Watson with a total bag weight of 15lbs 12oz. Third place went to Keith Burnett with a bag of 13lbs 14oz. Winner of the heaviest fish (not in top 3) category went to Andy Gooding with 3lb 2oz and the Blind Pairs Winners were Keith Burnett and Dave Johns with a whopping 39lb bag total. Full results here.

Kennick  

Rod Average: 2.27

Some nicely sized fish caught this week, with 5 anglers catching up or drawing level with this seasons records. Brian Parry from Newton Abbot caught 3 rainbows at 2.5lb, 3lb and 4lb, taken just below the surface on a damsel nymph; David Perks from St. Columb landed 5 rainbows to 3lb on  floating and intermediate lines; and Sharif Adams from Moretonhampstead caught 6 between 2 and 5lbs on a gold damsel a foot below the surface. Meanwhile, Martin Newton landed 5 rainbows to 4lb and William Lyne from Honiton caught one 30cm brown and 2 rainbows at 40-50cm on a Coch Y Bondu with slow retrieve just below the surface.

There were some other good catches for David Grimshaw from Dartmouth with two 2lb rainbows, caught 4ft deep with a slow retrieve on floating line, and Jeff Ferguson from Seaton with 2 rainbows at 1lb 12oz: ‘Last visit of the season , so I returned my last rainbow, missed three others. This has been my best season on Kennick by far. I was only fishing for 1 hour but it was worth the journey just to say farewell till next year. There were a lot of fish where the weed ends at Heather Bank in shallow water.’

D Marles from Kingsbridge got a full bag of 5 rainbows and 1 brown, while David Lupton from Dawlish caught one 2lb rainbow on a floating line with slow sinker, reporting very few fish rising.

Malcolm Ure from St Genny’s  reported plenty of fish moving on the surface, but caught all of his 7 rainbows to 2lb 4oz down deep.

Graham Roberts from Totnes landed just the one 3.25lb rainbow after losing 7 others: ‘Sunny, bright, cloudy later, light breeze. Quite a few fish showing on the surface, so intermediate lines as well as deep. Good numbers of sedges and small red dragon flies around and small buzzers. Had we landed the seven fish we lost, it would have been a good result.....some letting go after a really good scrap! That’s fishing! A pair of Little Grebes entertained us for a good part of the day.’

Siblyback

Rod Average: 1.33

4 fish between just the 3 anglers this week: John Broere from Rillamill had an enjoyable session, catching 2 rainbows at 1.5lb-2lb and one brown at 1lb on a black hopper fished dry and static, while Dave Styles from Liskeard caught 1 rainbow at 1lb 12oz on a red matuka with glitter on an intermediate line.

Burrator

Rod Average: 0.67

Lots of surface feeding activity this week with some strong follows and good takes which weren't necessarily converted to catches. Al Lawson from Plymouth caught a bag of 4 to 1.75lb, Alan Brown from Yelverton caught 2 rainbows at 2lb on an intermediate line fished deep with a medium retrieve, and Alan Clements from Plymouth caught 1 rainbow at 1lb 10oz on the second cast of an evening ticket fishing a Montana booby on a sinking line with slow retrieve, noting that surface feeding was sporadic.

Al Lawson from Plymouth caught 3 rainbows and a brown: ‘Good day at burry today managed 3 rainbows and a small brown all from Longstone. Definitely felt I should have got more as quite a few fish showing as tight shoals worked the bank on and off, though millpond conditions at times not helping. Fish not going out of the way for the fly, hits came when it cast right on the nose. Great sport.’

Stithians

Rod Average: 2.00

Simon Peters from Truro reported no rises and sparse insect life but caught 4 rainbows and 1 brown on an intermediate line, with very slow fig 8 retrieve. There were lots of sedges and small crane flies around on Wednesday when John Henderson from Falmouth landed 5 rainbows to 2lb and two 8" browns on an orange mini muddler, and on Monday when he landed a 3lb 1oz rainbow (largest of the week) and a 12oz brownie.

Fernworthy

Rod Average: 2.33

Lots of hatches and rises this week producing several missed takes as well as a respectable number of catches. Full bags for Nick Hawkins from South Brent with 5 browns to 2lb and Clive Garland from Tiverton with 5 to 35cm on a sedge emerger with slow retrieve on the surface, missing at least 6 others.

Colliford

Rod Average: 2.21

Many anglers were out last week to squeeze in one last session before the brown trout season came to an end on the 12th. Chris Tilyard from Fraddon landed 12 browns to 35cm: 'fantastic last session of the year, fished single dry sedges drifting in wind lanes close to shore. The bright sunshine didn't put them off, with most of the fish caught late morning and early afternoon. Missed lots of takes and im sure a better angler could have landed 20!'.  James Donald from Tonbridge caught a full bag of 4, as did Robert Swan from Plymouth, on a floating line with 3lb leader fished high in the water.

Christopher Brand from Roche unfortunately blanked but had an enjoyable final session of the season nonetheless: ‘Had to give it a final fling, fresh N/E wind, great conditions for the pulled wets, however the fish did not respond very well. I missed 4 half-hearted takes to the fast figure of eight retrieve (fish nipping at the fly). Overall a good season on the lake for me. Roll on March 15th!!! ‘

Roadford

Rod Average: 2.17

A general lack of rises and insect hatches this week but a floating line with slow retrieve seeming to do the trick.  Martin Ayers from Saltash caught 2 at 10" and 12" on a floating line with slow retrieve, and James Donald from Tonbridge caught 3 at 10-12". Meanwhile, Alan Judd from Seaton and his friend Ian Mackay from Bath finished the brownie season on a high with 8 fish to 1.5lb between them, pulling wets on a floating line just under the surface:

‘I had a great last day of the season yesterday in the boat at Roadford, joined by my friend Iain Mackay from Bath.

We motored over to Wortha Inlet and initially fished the south bank.  Iain had a couple of swirls to his flies and I had a take but sadly we were unable to hook any. Next, we tried East Wortha Point and again had the odd swirl and pull but nothing would stick.  I then took the boat to North Wortha point and our fishing was transformed.  Following a couple of takes Iain was suddenly into one so I grabbed the net to help him only to be greeted by a perch on one of his droppers.  Seeing this I put the net down again before realising that there was another fish, a trout, on his foam hopper point fly.  So after hurriedly grabbing the net once more, eventually both perch and trout were landed safely.  Iain is pictured proudly displaying his fine-looking brownie of around 1 1/2 lb.

Just after that I was into, what I thought was, a good fish.  However, as it drew near and I saw its size, it seemed to be punching well above its weight.  As you've probably guessed by now, I too was playing a double hook-up but this time 2 trout with the largest on the point fly.  So yet again I found myself trying to land 2 fish on the same leader, one on the soldier palmer dropper and the other on the bibio point fly.  I finally managed to get them both in and am pictured holding them both.

We then headed further up the lake towards the line with nature reserve and drifted back down the bank to North Wortha point.  I had a couple more of around 3/4 lb along the bank before catching a smaller one at the point.  Iain also managed a couple more so we finished the day with eight to the boat and was thrilled that my guest had the best fish of the day!’

Wildlife Round-up:

 A Little grebe at Burrator and a pair at Kennick, and a heron, a buzzard, a pair of ravens and 10 wigeon at Stithians.
