Reminders & Requests

• Please send me any photosof your catches, lakes or any nature or wildlife pictures that we could utilise for press articles or social media posting. It would also be great to have some clear and close up photos of some of the flies used, and would be very keen to see flies tied at home as well, so if you have any photos to hand please send them to- [email protected]

 

• Please complete Catch Returns online, this will enable us to gain a clearer picture of our lakes and stock levels which of course in turn will help us to continue to improve our Anglers experience.

 

• Any Roadford Brown Troutwith adipose removed as part of the project study please record and send any photo/details of these Brown Trout caught.

 

Bag, Catch & Release limits:

• Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all anglers purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing.
• Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!)

We currently have four boats available at Kennick, three at Roadford, two at Siblyback and one at Stithians.

News and Highlights from the week:

 

Anglers have utilised a variety of methods and fly lines to produce some steady fishing across the fisheries despite the lack of visible activity. Highlights this week include 14 full bags and a rod average of just under 5 at Colliford.

The qualifiers have a maximum of 12 people per heat with the top 6 qualifying for the £2000 final at Kennick on 17^th October.

Kennick  

Rod Average: 1.53

A variety of fly lines and methods utilised this week for some steady fishing.  A hatch of buzzers and an occasional rise resulted in a bag of 2 rainbows of around 2lb for Jack brown from South Brent, and Graham Read from Christow caught 2 at 1.25-1.5lb on a very slow retreive from the bottom on an intermediate line. Malcolm Ure of St Gennys had a successful session from his boat, with 8 rainbows at 1.5lbs.

Thank you also to Greg Abel from Moretonhampstead for this report: ‘Catch made on black blue flash damsel. Overcast morning gradually clearing at midday. Time 11:30, depth midwater. Slow retrieve floating line with 5ft sink tip. Other tactics used: fast sinking line, floating line, slow medium and fast retrieves. Fish rising to the surface from 6 to 7 am, disappeared when the wind picked up and ruffled the surface. Some surface activity from 12 to 2 not apparently feeding or very small flies. Good clump of chanterelle mushrooms to go with the fish.’

Siblyback

Rod Average: 0.00

A disappointing week at Siblyback, with all 7 catch returns recording nil returns. Fingers crossed for an improvement next week!

Burrator

Rod Average: 0.78

A quiet one this week with only 7 trout caught. Simon Jefferies from Plymouth caught 3 of those; 1lb rainbows on a claret dabbler and Kennick Killer, while William Caldwell from Plymouth caught 2 at 1.5lb on a woolly bugger. Biggest fish of the week goes to Jon Rood with a 3lb rainbow.

Stithians

Rod Average: 0.50

Phil Messenger-Roberts from St Austell had a fun session on Tuesday with 2 rainbows, 1 brown and several Rudd - one of which came close to a personal best for Phil. The other 2 trout of the week went to Rob Price (0.5lb) and Robert Lambourne with one rainbow at 1lb 10oz on an orange half-hog on 3wt floating line, fished parallel to the bank.

Fernworthy

Rod Average: 2.40

Patrick Murphy from Plymouth caught 6 brown trout to 12oz this week with a team of midges, while Clive Garland from Bampton caught 9 wild brownies on a dry sedge. Steven Holmes from South Brent caught 4 brown trout at 8-12" on Hawthorne and bibio: ‘Overcast, some drizzle, little rising but fish came to surface flies, more missed than hooked. Some swallows, four types butterflies one hatch of Damsel flies. Magical place as always, now fished here for 56 years.’

Colliford

Rod Average: 4.89

Another great week at Colliford with a rod average of just under 5 and 14 full bags between 18 anglers. Dean Boucher from Gunnislake had another cracking week, catching 14 browns on Thursday and another 14 on Friday on a red hopper and a foam beetle; the former being most productive on the Thursday but the beetle outperforming the hopper on the Friday. Chris Tilyard from Fraddon also had a couple of successful sessions with 14 fish over two days on a GRHE dry fly and a black spider pattern. Mr Hicks from Roche reported fish rising from 16.00 during his session on Saturday, producing 3 browns at 10".

Thank you Dean for this report: ‘Only had a few hours to spare this morning so opted for the East Bank. Started off on dries which had worked really well on my last two visits. Not today though. An hour or so`s fishing produced just one rise which I promptly missed. I switched to a team of pulled wets. Soldier Palmer, Zulu, and Black and Peacock Spider, on 12`s and 14`s, this seemed to do the trick with all 3 patterns scoring. All smaller fish today up to 12 oz. On my way back to the car park I stopped to watch a big flock of Goldfinches feeding eagerly on some Thistle seed heads. A lovely sight. It’s been great to spend some time back on Colliford with some really enjoyable fishing this week.’

Roadford

Rod Average: 1.17

Little activity from the trout this week , but Gordon Tyson caught 4 brown trout of 1lb 2oz - 2lb from his boat, and Wayne Middleton from Okehampton caught 2  to 1.25lb on a bibio. Patrick Murphy from Plymouth caught 1 brown trout and many perch which are still in abundance with 63 being caught this week by anglers with perch permits.

Wildlife Round-up:

This week's reported wildlife sightings include a kestrel sitting on a post 5m from angler at Burrator, Goldfinches feeding on thistle seed heads at Colliford, swallows, various species of butterflies, and damselflies at Fernworthy, lots of ducks and a diving duck at Kennick.

 

  

Hope to catch up on one of our waters in the very near future.
