Temperatures have been very warm over the last few days which has meant that while anglers have enjoyed some great fishing, the time of day and tactics used have been crucial. It looks as though temperatures may continue to rise over the rest of the week and there has now been an Amber warning of extreme heat issued for South-West England.

We are keeping a close eye on the situation and of course, fish welfare must remain paramount. Keep an eye on the website for any updates, but in the meantime please do exercise caution, limiting handling and ensuring that where relevant, catch and release is done promptly and into deep enough water. Do remember we offer evening tickets as well as full-day, allowing for shorter sessions which may also coincide with more activity on the water.

Wistlandpound

Some great fishing reported at Wistlandpound this week. Several large brownies up to 2.5lbs and some hard-fighting smaller browns too. Grey and brown patterns seemed to have good results with the larger fish tending to be deeper waters responding to slow sinking lines. Again, more activity was seen later in the afternoon.

 

Kennick  

Rod Average: 2.59

Some busy sessions at Kennick over the last week but with fish being deeper down than of recent and tending to be found during the early afternoon. Peter Gilpin had 3 rainbows to nearly 3lbs, Malcom Ure had a great day with 7 rainbow to over 3lbs. Mike Weston had 5 rainbows all on Bishop buzzers while Chris Head from Ottery St Mary had 3 rainbows to 23bs. Mike Herring had 4 rainbows to 2lbs on a warm day, after changing flies to a Damsel:

 

“A gorgeous summer's day,but sweltering on the water! 24.5C in the shade (no shade!), but this morning's water temperature in the middle still only 19C, but I don't think that's going to last. Hardly any breeze before I packed up at 1.20.

I struggled at first, but Malcolm Ure was doing OK (bagging up by noon!). Best spot anchored 50 yards off The Lawns 'stripping fast' a weighted Blue Flash Damsel through the water a few feet down. He gave me one of these damsels and I caught three in the first three casts! I could even watch them chasing the fly!”

Siblyback

Rod Average: 2.25

A real game of two halves at Siblyback this week. Some brilliant sessions were had while on other days it was a real challenge to find the right tactic in the varying conditions. Andy and Al Lawson had 5 fish each:  "Five hard won rainbows each. All on black sparkle hopper dries on the West Bank. The heat and lack of any wind made it tough going for quite some time, but after around eleven, when occasional ripples and cloud cover began to form we started getting into some fish working up and down the bank; we clocked off at two with five each. Had one take that bolted like an Exocet. The smallest of the lot… I could see the bow wave heading toward the dry fly and wallop! Didn’t it smack it!! … and then it went airborne; outstanding! They really were solid such scrappers, and catching them all on dries made for an exceptional session!". Paul Bancroft from Plymouth had 5 rainbows to 2lbs.

Burrator

Rod Average: 2.75

Changeable weather conditions meant that anglers had to respond by varying their tactics throughout the day. Graham Cant had a lovely rainbow and brown pair from the bank, Alan Judd had 3 rainbows, catching them in the first two feet. Mike Lunney had a great session on a boat, showing how perserverence pays off- changing location and tactics to get 6 rainbows. Tony Hill and his Father-in-Law Ivor Rose had 2 and 3 fish respectively, really enjoying their day.

Stithians

Rod Average: 1.30

Although the details in catch returns this week have been minimal, there has been an overall picture of fish becoming more active towards the end of the day when the weather has started to cool. Pipe Bay and Mossops have been popular spots to try, with fish responding to beetles, black gnats and damsels.

Fernworthy

Rod Average: 1.90

There were still some great sessions this week, despite the temperatures really increasing over the weekend. Richard Buckingham from Helston had 5 brownies while John Shore from Totnes had 2. Jack Brown from Totnes sent in a detailed (always appreciated) report and said it was a "Beautiful day with the wind being stronger than expected. Started on nymphs as there was very little surface activity. One fish later and a few rises showing I switched to a hopper pattern with the fish taking them either dry or slowly trickled back just sub surface"

Colliford

Rod Average: 5.20

 

Despite the rising temperatures, some great sessions this week. Daniel Gilbert had 4 lovely browns up to 30cm, while Chris Tilyard had 6 browns on one day and 15 on another.  Fish were more active in the mornings and later afternoon when the temperatures had cooled.
