Trout Fishing

We extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres!

Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters.

Young People and Newcomers

We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all.

Boat Fishing

Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page.

You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here

Access for All

Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Clubs

A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page.

Environment Agency Rod Licence

Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand.

South West Lakes Trust

South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver.

Reporting an Incident:

South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging.

Please use this form to report any incidents of poaching, illegal fishing or any other form of antisocial behaviour to the management team so that we are able to take appropriate action.

Reminders & Requests

  • Please send me any photos of your catches, lakes or any nature or wildlife pictures that we could utilise for press articles or social media posting. It would also be great to have some clear and close up photos of some of the flies used, and would be very keen to see flies tied at home as well, so if you have any photos to hand please send them to- [email protected]

  • Please complete Catch Returns online, this will enable us to gain a clearer picture of our lakes and stock levels which of course in turn will help us to continue to improve our Anglers experience.

  • Any Roadford Brown Trout with adipose removed as part of the project study please record and send any photo/details of these Brown Trout caught.

Bag, Catch & Release limits:

  • Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all anglers purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing.
  • Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!)

Kennick

A contrast to last week’s total of 41 fish with just the 5 this week. Reginald Smale from Newton Abbot caught 2 at 3lbs and 3.5lbs, Brian Parry, also from Newton Abbot, caught 1 2lb rainbow, and Peter Gilpin caught 2 rainbows to 2.75lb. Meanwhile, Dave Bullock from Kingsbridge caught 1 35cm brown trout on a floating line with sinking leader.

Siblyback

Rod Average: 0.50

Heavy wind and large waves this week, making fishing conditions difficult. Two anglers braved the elements to produce 1 fish between them: a 1lb 8oz rainbow for Andy Dexter from Pensilva on an intermediate line with medium retrieve from Crylla bay.

Burrator

Rod Average: 2.0

Some good weather conditions and cooler water temperatures producing some energetic and good fighting fish this week. Steven Carter from Tavistock had almost a full bag with 4 rainbows to 2lb on a floating line with fast retrieve: 'Beautiful morning with the water like a mill pond, only started catching when the wind picked up and sky changed.' Gary Stickland from Chagford caught 3 to 1.5lbs from a boat off Pig Trough bay, while Andy Lawson from Plymouth managed 3 rainbows between 1.75lb and 1.5lb on an intermediate line pulling a black fritz:

‘Real tough going at Burrator in the boat today! Conditions seemed pretty good; overcast with sunny spells - wind had dropped, but there was definitely a cold bite and though there were some scarce rises earlier in the day there were hardly any fish moving as the day went on.

Managed three rainbows around Longstone - between a 1lb and a quarter and a 1lb and a half…good feisty fish (with a lot more energy now the water’s a bit colder). All on an intermediate line pulling a black Fritz. They were hard won though, one caught early in the morning, then nothing until after two… Al bro had one, and we both lost a couple but we never felt like we really ‘found them’ today. Another fab day out at Burry though!’

Stithians

Rod Average: 2.00

A general lack of activity this week but Phil Messenger-Roberts from St Austell still managed over a full bag with 6 rainbows up to 3lb on black and white and green fritz patterns, missing plenty more takes:

‘Freezing cold but mainly bright with heavy showers. Temperature never rose too much above 8C except when the sun showed - which wasn’t frequent. I forgot my snips which made changing fly awkward, but went through a whole bunch of nymphs and lures before the trout settled on fritz type lures fished quite quickly just below the surface. Missed a stack of takes and was smashed twice, so should really have filled the bag but it wasn’t to be. These were the best quality fish I have ever seen at Stithians - all large and full finned, long in the body and scrapped hard all the way to the net.’

Clive Pearce from Perranwell Station caught 2 at 1lb each on a slow intermediate sinking line fished on the bottom, while Graeme Clement from Edgecumbe caught 1 at 2lb 6oz: ‘Dropped 1 on a cat’s whisker, landed 1 on a Cormorant. Very few signs of fish on the surface, Steady breeze dropped to nothing at the end of afternoon, flat calm everywhere, with nothing showing, and no sign in the shallows of any fry-bashing.’

James Lovekin from Helston caught one 36cm rainbow on a deer hair sedge: ‘Calm airs and glassy water in the more sheltered bays. Fished the evening until sunset, with very little activity visible - no rising fish, but persevered with dry fly and got lucky with a nice 36cm rainbow taking the DHS. Saw a kestrel hunting around the margins and the usual flocks of Canada geese passing. Little grebes on the water. Splendid evening.’
