Reminders & Requests

• Please send me any photos of your catches, lakes or any nature or wildlife pictures that we could utilise for press articles or social media posting. It would also be great to have some clear and close up photos of some of the flies used, and would be very keen to see flies tied at home as well, so if you have any photos to hand please send them to- [email protected]

 

• Please complete Catch Returns online, this will enable us to gain a clearer picture of our lakes and stock levels which of course in turn will help us to continue to improve our Anglers experience.

 

• Any Roadford Brown Trout with adipose removed as part of the project study please record and send any photo/details of these Brown Trout caught.

 

Bag, Catch & Release limits:

• Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all anglers purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing.
• Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!)

News and Highlights from the week:

Low activity levels across the fisheries this week in terms of both insect life and rises, but anglers have utilised a wide range of fly lines and methods to produce some good catches. Low rod averages were made up for with some nicely sized fish.

 

Best of the Best Competition

There are still plenty of spaces left for qualifying for the Best of the Best Competition:

The qualifiers have a maximum of 12 people per heat with the top 6 qualifying for the £2000 final at Kennick on 17^th October.

Kennick  

Rod Average: 0.96

Some good size trout caught at Kennick this week with the heaviest catches of the week going to Reginald Smale from Newton Abbot with a 3lb rainbow and Peter Gilpin from Newton Abbot with 5 rainbows between 2.5lb and 3lb on a washing line set up.

Robert Boniface from Exeter landed 2 rainbows to 2.5lb on a deep sinking line, while Graham Read caught another at 2lb: 'It was a dull misty start to the day. There was a light breeze and I saw a few fish cruising just below the surface, gently breaking the surface with their tail/dorsal. Nothing I tried on or near the surface worked. I caught my fish from the corner of Clampits on a sinking line with 2 boobies. The second (a small orange and yellow blob booby) seemed to make all the difference, along with an average speed jerky retrieve. I fished from around 09:30 to around 13:30.'

‘It was a rather frustrating yet warm sunny day for the six bank anglers and five anglers occupying all four boats. The water temperature was 17C and the water level dropping. The northerly breeze seemed chilly.

I caught two rainbows (1lb 10oz and 1lb 8oz, the former one freshly stocked, the other one wasn't) in the first 15 minutes, then 'missed' another five (all great 'takes' but came off straight away) by 1pm, when I'd had enough!

Siblyback

Rod Average: 1.20

Little activity this week with a handful of catches. William Brown caught 2 rainbows at 2.5lb: 'Fine weather sunny and cloudy, mild breeze. Trout came to dry flies when wind was low. Grey Minkie catch towards end of day when wind picked up on intermediate line, varied retrieve.' Robert Cobbledick from Bude caught 2 rainbows on a pheasant tail nymph, Michael John Wall from Falmouth caught 1 42cm rainbow and Ian Sturt from Newton Abbot landed a 1lb 4oz rainbow on a lime green baby doll.

Burrator

Rod Average: 1.42

Little insect activity and few visible rises this week but still some good catches with plenty of fish at a good size, with many around the 2lb mark. Graeme Taylor from Plymouth caught 2 rainbows at 1.5lb and 2lb on a sinking line with short leader and constant retrieve, after having no interest on a midge tip line with a wide range of flies, while Al lawson from Plymouth got another 2 to 2lb just a couple of feet from the bank on a dry daddy despite a lack of rises during his session. The fish were laying deep with no surface feeding when Jonny Mac from Plympton landed his 4 to 2lb (and 2 crayfish!) on a sinking line.

Paul Ackland from Plymouth caught 2 browns, one at 2lb:

‘Gentle breeze with sunny intervals. Very little fly life, odd fish rising. Caught a beautiful marked brown trout of at least 2lb which took a dry sedge, then another smaller brown on the nymph. Saw a few Swallows. Another enjoyable days angling.’

Stithians

Rod Average: 0.93

John Hedges from Falmouth caught 3 rainbows to 2lb: 'Start 09:00. As the mist cleared, a bright sunny morning. All very quiet apart from a heron in the margins. Westerly ripple but no fish showing. First set up floating line with 6lb floro. 1st fish at 11:00. Slow retrieve. Still very quiet on the nature front. Clouded over so moved. Second set up 6lb copolymer with hoppers and a muddler. A few fish showing at 13:00 and 2 caught in close succession. Then all quiet apart from a couple of ducks. A few late swallows around the dam. Finished 14:45.'

Fernworthy

Rod Average: 0.25

 Very quiet at Fernworthy with just the one catch to report: Anthony Fisher from Newport with one brown trout at 10”.

Colliford

Rod Average: 2.25

Generally very quiet this week with occasional short bursts of activity. A couple of full bags for Paul Mockford from St Wenn with 5 browns at 25-30cm, and Dean Boucher with 8 to 1lb 4oz: 'Started with pulled wets on a floating line. Soldier Palmer and Zulu on the droppers caught a fish a piece but the Black Tadpole on the point was my best pattern this morning, catching 5 fish. Takes dried up a bit late morning so switched to dries briefly before leaving, had one more fish on a Black Hopper and missed a couple more. Left at lunchtime after an enjoyable mornings fishing.'

Roadford

Rod Average: 2.00

Christopher Brand from Roche caught 1 brown at 8oz on a foam beetle, while Alan Judd from Seaton had a great boat session on Tuesday with 7 browns around the 0.75lb-1lb mark caught on dries:

‘I had a great day in the boat at Roadford on Tuesday.  I caught a total of 7 brownies with 2 at 1lb 9oz and 1lb 12oz respectively.

The conditions were calm with an intermittent ripple and hazy sunshine. 

I started in Goodacre bay, drifting along the north bank, when I suddenly had a take and landed my first brownie of around 1lb. There were several fish cruising on the top but I didn't manage to tempt any more. I then tried the boils for a while to no avail before heading over to Wortha Inlet and drifted along the south bank.  Here I found more fish cruising and it wasn't long before I landed another of around the same size, both fish falling for a soldier palmer. 

I then changed my point fly to a black and red skinny damsel nymph which brought instant results and I was soon playing a good fish.  Once landed, I weighed it in the net at 1lb 9oz.  Several fish still seemed to be cruising on the top so I couldn't resist having a go with the dries.  I cast out a single olive klinkhammer on my #5 weight rod not really expecting much when a fish came up and engulfed it!  It was another of around 1lb and I was thrilled to have landed one on the dries but better things were about to come!  I had a few more casts with the dry set up and suddenly another fish came up and took it.  This was a much better fish which led me a merry dance on the #5 weight which I could do nothing with until it finally tired and succumbed to net.  This turned out to be the biggest fish of the day tipping the scales at 1lb 12oz!

Soon after this the wind freshened causing a bigger ripple so I decided to head over to the north bank.  Here I caught 2 smaller fish and missed 2 or 3 more before heading back to the boat dock.

Another fantastic day at a SW Lakes brown trout water!’
