Wistlandpound

Wistlandpound Continues to drop quickly as predominantly dry conditions continue across the region. The water remains clear with extensive weed growth in shallow areas that does not impede the fishing to any extent. The water wild brown trout seem to thriving with a short session often bringing half a dozen fish to hand. Small dark flies continue to work well fished on floating lines with a fine tippet.

Kennick  

Rod Average: 2.45

Fish were found in deeper waters last week despite lots of fly activity and large hatches in places, with anglers favouring sinking and intermediate lines, or floating lines with a long leader. Brian Parry from Newton Abbot caught 9 rainbows to 2.5lbs on a floating line with long leader and slow retrieve, while Malcolm Ure from St Genny's caught 6 from his boat using buzzer and booby patterns. Brian Sedgebeer from Islington caught 9 to 2.6lb from a float tube, 'Sinking line fast strip about 4-6ft down with damsel. Slow retrieve 12ft leader sink line on bottom with fab'.

    

‘Today felt more like Summer than Spring - it was warm with a variable South Easterly breeze and very sunny. I checked the water temperature out in the middle and the thermometer read 16.5C. The first thing I saw in the car park was a wonderful Fritillary butterfly. I once used to think Fritillaries all looked the same, but this was so brightly coloured I would have guessed it was a Marsh Fritillary.

Other notable wild life included two different cuckoos calling, a pair of crested grebes, a heron (see photo) and a mallard with eight ducklings which looked more than a week old.

The rhododendrons are beginning to flower so Kennick is starting to look at its best, with all the trees now in leaf.

I caught three rainbows on a 'black fritz damsel looking thing' via a floating line and, because a few fish were showing (only in the morning), I spent some time with dries. Two brownies each hammered the black hopper on the top dropper and fought much better than the 8 ounces that they each were.’ – Mike Herring

Siblyback

Rod Average: 3.62

Plenty of hatches to be had at Siblyback last week despite an initial lack of rises. George Hext from Liskeard caught 10 rainbows and 1 brownie, losing one of 4lb, on Montana, nymph and booby patterns fished 2-3ft down with a variable rerieve, while Martin Stevens from Liskeard caught 4 rainbows and left some great feedback: 'Cloudy with intermittent sunshine with a southern moderate breeze. Fish caught at six feet and throughout the water column, no hatches visible. Flies drifting with current and wind,figure of eight, with medium pull. Lines used: floating with fifteen foot leaders. Wildlife: swallows, mallards. PS. orange was the favourite colour which the fish took a liking to. Would like to thank South West Lakes staff and fellow fly fishers for their helpfulness - Siblyback Lake is well worth a visit so don’t miss out!!!!'

Burrator

Rod Average: 3.00

Lots of hatches and plenty of surface activity last week, particularly later in the day and during spells of cloud cover, with fish caught between surface level and 4ft. Stephen Eldridge from Yelverton caught 5 rainbows to 2lb on a floating line and long tippet fished sub-surface, while jason from Plymouth landed 4 from a boat: 'Bright to start with, breezy. Fish switched on later in the day when it became more overcast. Hatch of buzzers towards evening and fish taking off the top. Before that, long leader, floating line, and slow retrieve with a long lift at the end was inducing takes on silver dancer on point, or green host spot cormorant.'

Stithians

Rod Average: 4.41

Anglers reported a lack of insect hatches and fish rises last week but still managed to produce the equivalent of 15 full bags between them. Dave Rundle from St Austell caught 9 on damsel and bibio patterns, while Stephen Glanville from St Agnes landed 5 to a total of 8lb 9oz on a floating line with 15ft leader.

Wildlife: Little Egret, Kestrel, Jay, Cuckoo, Tawny Owl, Sky Larks.

Fernworthy

Rod Average: 1.67

Not much in the way of rises at Fernworthy last week but anglers managed to tempt the fish with dry flies, catching on floating lines with slow retrieves. Louise Hindley from Newton Abbott caught 3 brownies to 15 inches on a Kate McLaren/b&p spider, while Glen Angel from Teignmouth landed 6 on a floating line with slow retrieve. Brian Dent from South Brent had 4 on a Sedgehog fished on the surface with a trailing small bibio, missing several more takes, and Brian Sedgebeer from Islington caught 4 to 14 inches on a dry dropper on floating line.

Colliford

Rod Average: 4.33

Lots of rises last week, generally earlier on in the day during overcast periods before the sky cleared. Dean Boucher from Gunnislake caught 18 browns: 'Lovely day at Colliford. Nice conditions, moderate Southerly breeze with some decent cloud cover for most of the time. Fished my way up the East Bank. Caught fish steadily in most locations , Lower East and The Narrows around Boggy Point probably the most productive areas for me today. All the fish on pulled wets on a floating line. Fished the same team , Soldier Palmer, White Tailed Zulu, and Black Tadpole right throughout . Brief go on the dries in Gillhouse Bay where the water flattened out but didn`t rise anything. A lovely day at Colliford was made even more enjoyable for seeing and hearing the Curlew calling as I sat and enjoyed the final cup of tea of the day. Great stuff.'

 Bag, Catch & Release limits:

• Rainbow Trout- Bag Limit is 5 fish. Catch & Release limit is 10 fish per day – we would kindly ask that all anglers purchase a further ticket if they would like to continue fishing.
• Brown Limit– Bag Limit is 4 fish. Catch & Release is unlimited (if you’re lucky enough to catch good numbers of our Brownies then we feel it’s well deserved!)
