Trout Fishing

We extend a warm welcome to all trout anglers. The range of fishing we offer ensures excellent sport for all abilities. Our still water fisheries are among the best in the west and vary in size from around 50 to over 900 acres!

Our fisheries are picturesque and atmospheric lakes, including countless secluded bays, weedy shores and tree line margins to explore. We boast rainbows, browns and a large number of blues of the highest quality. Traditional fly fishing is the rule at our stocked fisheries, although other methods can be used at our free wilderness trout waters.

Young People and Newcomers

We are working hard to encourage young people and newcomers to take up the sport. Under 18 fish for free with a paying adult and part of their bag limit. Throughout the season, we host open days and events where we offer free fly fishing tuition for all.

Boat Fishing

Boats are available at most of our waters which provide an alternative to bank angling. These must be pre-booked, either by calling 01566 771930 (8.30am - 5.00pm 7 days a week) or online by scrolling to the bottom of your chosen lake page.

You will need to sign a disclaimer before you can take a boat out. Once a year you will need to complete a boat induction – please watch the induction video here

Access for All

Most of the waters benefit from facilities designed for disabled or wheelchair anglers, either by platforms or Wheelyboats. These boats must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Clubs

A number of the fisheries have associated local clubs. These are a great way to meet fellow anglers, as well as participating in competitions and social events. We run several competitions during the season - more details of each of these are available on our competitions page.

Environment Agency Rod Licence

Anglers on all our waters must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence which are available from post offices or via the Environment Agency. The only exception may be when attending a bona fide course or a coaching session with a qualified coach – please check beforehand.

South West Lakes Trust

South West Lakes Trust is the managing charity of SW Lakes Trust Fishing. The charity is a member of The Angling Trust. In 2014, the South West Lakes Trust fisheries hosted the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships; Scotland took gold and England won silver.

Reporting an Incident:

South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging.

Please use this form to report any incidents of poaching, illegal fishing or any other form of antisocial behaviour to the management team so that we are able to take appropriate action.

  • Please send me any photos of your catches, lakes or any nature or wildlife pictures that we could utilise for press articles or social media posting. Kennick

Rod Average: 2.51

A good week with fishing being caught in numbers both from shore and boat. The fish are sitting in shallow water taking flies just sub-surface, and fished mid water in 10-12ft of water. Tough weather conditions making fishing difficult but anglers were rewarded by some great bags. Geoff V had 10 fish on 14th, John P had 5 fish on 12th, Tom H had a brown from boat bay during the week too which is great to see!

Burrator

Rod Average: 4.38

Some really good bags this week, with both boats and shore producing good fish. Tucked out of the wind at longstone and back bay seemed to be a successful spot. Wet and windy all week but that didn’t put the fish off!

Fernworthy

Rod Average – 3.45

A good week with most anglers catching. Fishing has been tough with the wind and the rain but the browns have been feeding well on some decent hatches off the surface - competing with the swallows! Try a small black traditional dry fished on the surface with a fine leader.

Great catch report from Charles J - '"Just to let you know, a cracking day fishing in pretty awful weather on 16-5. Torrential rain eventually eased to heavy(very) showers. But we had a brilliant day fishing the margins, a lot of trial and error, tried everything and eventually had fish rising to twitched sedge.

Father son trip, meant to be fishing the fishing rivers but they were washed out, Fernworthy made a great alternative!"

Andy W had a good day on 16th, with 6 fish; Andrew G had 11 fish on 15th ; Stuart M with 8 fish on 14th ; David F had 3 fish on 11th ; just to name a few, some really good bags!

Colliford

Rod Average: 2.22

A mixed week, both in weather and also in activity seen. One angler reported that "There was some activity around a midday hatch, then the wind changed and thick cloud cover rolled in and fishing just died." and "Fished late in afternoon (from 6pm), wet, windy and cold. No hatches. Fished with very small buzzer with a 3-weight rod (very light gear)." Chris T 2 fish, Keith C 2 fish and Chris B 3 fish.

Roadford

Rod Average: 5.0

While there was not much in the way of insect life seen this week, anglers had some success matching the Hawthorns that were spotted, and slow retrieves seemed to be the best choice for bringing in the fish. Some notes from the week: Gary S - 5 Fish "We moved all over the lake and caught in all locations. All fish were taken on a sinking line with a slow pull retrieve!" Ian s - Sorry, no weights only lengths - Brown, 12, Dry hawthorn 12 (kept). Brown, 10.5, Bloodworm 12 (Returned). Browns x 6, 7 - 9" plus 3 small Perch, Dry hawthorn, Pheasant tail nymph, Orange buzzer, Diawl bach, all 10 or 12 (Returned), Duncan K - 7 fish to 1.5lb

*Below an image photo a Brown Trout with adipose removed as part of the project study on Roadford. Please record and send any details of these Brown Trout caught.
