We are shining a spotlight on Tamar Lakes this June – find out what has been happening recently!

Café – TLC

The lovely, newly redecorated Tamar Lake Cafe (TLC) is fully open, serving family-friendly, fresh, home-cooked food and cakes, coffee and artisan teas.

Meet Sophie and Luisa, who run the café:

“We are Sophie and Luisa, the new tenants of Tamar Lake Cafe, and we are excited to welcome you! In the past we have run remote back-country hiking lodges in the Austrian alps. We are happy to take on this new challenge of coffees and cakes which are a welcome change from beers and schnitzel!

“We were somewhat lucky that the restrictions were in place when we first opened as we could be painting and renovating whilst still serving takeaway. Now things are in full swing, it’s so encouraging to hear the comments from everyone to say how great it all looks! Even though we have only been here two months, it is so nice to see the familiar regulars and it’s our favourite part of the job. Well… that, and sampling the ice cream flavours!

"One aspect that is very important to us is using local ingredients in our homemade cakes. It has been hard during lockdown to source things locally but now everything is opening up, we have had more opportunities to visit butchers and farmers and make sure we are using the best the local area has to offer.

“Although it’s still early we have so many ideas; using Luisa’s German influence we are excited to offer a Christmas market in December, film nights and even showcase evening meals for local producers. However, we need to survive our first busy summer and still hopefully find time to try out the new swan pedalo at Upper Tamar Lake!”

Activities

Our activities team at Tamar is working hard to ensure people have a great time when they visit. Stand up paddleboards (SUPs), kayaks, canoes, sailing dinghies and a rowing boat are all available to hire, and you can also launch your own crafts. Cycle hire and a swan pedalo are new for this year, providing plenty of opportunities for families of all ages and abilities to get out on the water together.

Heading our activity team are Tom Sparks and Cameron Putt (below), who are both local and have been with us for a few seasons. Cameron has recently completed his safety boat ticket, so he will be there to rescue anyone who needs a bit of help on the lake!

Environment

The 3 mile round-reservoir walk at Tamar is beautiful at this time of year, with a stunning array of wildlife and flowers on show. Don't forget to pick up one of our '101 things to do this summer' booklet from the notice board in the car park to give you fun outdoor activity ideas for your visit!
