Flammulaster Muricatus (?)

I photographed this mushroom a few months ago, and have been puzzling over its identity ever since. I have ended up tentatively deciding on Flammulaster muricatus, though if anyone knows better please feel free to correct me in the comments section!

The “fuzzy” cap on the fruiting body is certainly distinctive, and in Flammulaster muricatus the appearance can vary from really rather shaggy and hairy to almost hard and spiky. It is a relatively uncommon species (hence my somewhat tentative ID) and is found in woodlands in the South of England.

It’s nice to have the odd ID mystery to keep life interesting!
