Meet Kevin Pearson, Roadford Countryside Warden

Hi all.

My name is Kevin Pearson and I am the Countryside Warden responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the beautiful Roadford Lake.

I was born in Keilder, Northumberland and my father was a forester. We moved down to Devon when I was 7 years old. After attending Holsworthy Primary and Secondary school, I went onto agricultural college and became a herdsman and general farm worker. After milking cows for many years, I ended up running a 1000 acre organic estate. When a vacancy came up at Roadford Lake working for South West Lakes Trust, I jumped at it. My ideal job – working on the land but without the animals. I have a small team of volunteers, (new ones are always welcome to join us) who help with willow cutting, laying hedges, and a variety of other jobs that involves the general upkeep of the lake.

One of my favourite jobs is cutting the grass, especially early morning which for me is best time of the day. The lake always looks different at this time. The light, the reflections, even the air feels sharper and cleaner. It’s the only time you can only hear the birds singing and nothing else.

Roadford is my favourite place I have ever worked, and I love it.
