Successful Wildlife Day at Stithians Lake

90 children and their families ventured off the beaten track at Stithians Lake on Wednesday (9 August) to discover some of the creatures that make the lake their home.

Pond dipping at South West Lakes Trust’s wildlife day was a great success, with fantastic close up views of a variety of critters including sticklebacks, leeches, beetles, shrimps, snails, larvae, newts and even a water scorpion. The little explorers also enjoyed using the sweep nets in the long grass to catch a whole range of bugs and tested their knowledge on a mini beast quiz trail. This was then followed by some nature crafts where the kids created clay models based on their discoveries.

Beth Heasman, South West Lakes Trust Countryside Warden, thanked the volunteers who helped to make the day such a success. “We are always pleased to receive help from volunteers. If you have some spare time and would like to learn a new skill, or have a skill you can pass on to others, we’re keen to hear from you.”

The Trust run a variety of events throughout the year across Devon, Cornwall and West Somerset. Our next family wildlife event will be taking place at Argal Reservoir on 19 August.

Drop in to Argal between 10.00am and 3.00pm and take part in a variety of activities including; kids fishing, wildlife based crafts, round the lake trail, bug hunting, pond dipping, bird feeder and bug house making and more.
