Over 400 People Flock to Burrator for Second Birthday Celebrations

On Sunday 3 July local charity South West Lakes Trust hosted a celebration event at Burrator Reservoir to recognise the Discovery Centre’s second birthday. Over 400 people joined in the afternoon of activities in and around the Discovery Centre, delivered by our fantastic team of volunteers.

There was a good combination of first time visitors to the Centre and many familiar faces who had already had contact with the project through either work experience placements, volunteering, attending a school visit, evening talk or guided walk or from getting actively involved in our family wildlife watch sessions.

People of all ages enjoyed toasting marshmallows over the fire, learning how to make stools and mallets in the green woodworking workshop, hunting for bugs, constructing their own bird boxes to take home as well as getting their faces painted as their favourite animal. In addition the Trust hosted several heritage talks and walks on the building of the dams and ended with a bird walk.

Emily Cannon, Burrator Heritage Learning Officer, said ‘The birthday celebration provided the perfect opportunity to launch our new art trail and quiz and everyone could paint a stone as part of the final feature. The weather was much better than originally forecast and whilst sitting to eat some homemade cake, looking out at the reservoir and listening to acoustic music, I felt you couldn’t be in a more beautiful place.’

After the event closed the Trust turned its attention to their annual Burrator volunteers’ celebration BBQ to which over 70 people attended, along with their families, to thank everyone for all their hard work and support over the year. The volunteers were also presented with certificates. Over 2,500 volunteer days have been achieved to date at Burrator which equates to a staggering value of £125,000!!!
