Successful Conservation Volunteer program - Fri 20 Aug 2010

The Volunteer Conservation Officer program had a steady start, Robin Hellis VCO carried out Ride and Glade management, orchard restoration, invasive species management and dormouse surveys at Roadford Lake in the last few weeks. Hannah Palmer VCO participated in wildflower meadow management, bat surveys and dormouse surveys at Lopwell Dam, near Plymouth.Allan Smith and Kelly Diggle VCOs recently carried out successful butterfly survey works and bracken management at Argal and College.

Neil Reeves Conservation Officer is very pleased with the successful Conservation Volunteer program: "We have been very lucky to recruit such a dedicated, enthusiastic, and reliable group of Conservation Volunteers. They are all from different backgrounds, but the conservation of species, habitats, and historic sites brings them all together. It's wonderful to see that people are still willing to give up their free time to help out with this valuable work. Many thanks to you all."

Being a volunteer means that you will become part of a like minded team, improve your skills and knowledge and help to ensure the protection of key sites for wildlife and future generations. You'll also be able to help steer the direction of future conservation work and exercise in the fresh air. Work includes practical conservation tasks such as scrub management, invasive species control, grassland management, hedgerow and woodland management and flora and fauna recording. The hours are totally flexible and can be weekly, twice monthly or in any other arrangement to suit volunteers and the site.
