Paths can follow along the shoreline of lakes. Here they are generally flat, but the ground water level is high, so you can encounter muddy conditions in wet weather when strong shoes or boots are recommended. For this reason we can't encourage cyclists or horse riders on those stretches, as the surface would soon become impassable for walkers.
There are many other paths on higher ground which meander through woodland and on to open moorland. We have clear signs showing the routes of public bridleways and permissive walks and cycle routes. Some paths are relatively level and have been surfaced to improve wheelchair access.
