Orchard comes back to life - Tue 4 May 2010

Orchards were once widespread throughout the British Isles and apple varieties hail from north of Inverness to the edge of Cornwall. Until recently every farm, country house and suburban garden had its own collection of fruit trees.
Traditional orchards are a UK Biodiversity Action Plan conservation priority and are home to local varieties of apples, plums, pears and damsons, and provide an important habitat for wildlife. The orchard at Roadford has been stocked with a variety of local apple trees including Ben's Red, Farmer's Glory and Plympton Pine.

Otter Update
Following the creation of two new otter holts (Lower Tamar & Venford) evidence of use has been found at both within two months of finishing.

Batty Projects
Two partnership projects are currently taking place to provide new habitats and monitoring schemes for bats. The Trust together with South West Water and the Cornwall Bat Group have been putting up bat boxes made by charity Self Unlimited at College Lake near Penryn.
New boxes are also due to go up at Burrator Reservoir (a joint scheme with Devon Bat Group and South West Water) some of the boxes are made from timber recently felled from a Douglas Fir plantation.

Location: Roadford Lake
